To give a brief explanation of the match structure, for those who are not familiar with fencing (understandable), here is how the event unfolded. The teams fought in 3 different styles of fencing: épée, sabre and foil, each with a different sword type and unique rules. All 3 styles are fought in relay style matches, with a team of fencers swapping in and out every 5 points. Each fight lasts for 3 minutes, unless a fencer wins their 5 points before the time is up. Ultimately, the first team to get 45 points wins the whole fight, and gains points for their university, then the wins across the 3 styles are added up to determine the overall winners of the event.
The York women’s épée team got off to a slightly slow start, with the first fight giving Lancaster the initial lead of 5-2. With each tense fight, the team spirit kept fencers energized, sparking a determination within York to keep closing that gap. By the final fight, the score was very close, setting the stage for a nail biting conclusion to the battle. After a tense fight of equally matched skill and precision, it was Lancaster who came out victorious, with a nail- bitingly close result of 45-44. In men’s épée, the tension was palpable, as both teams displayed support for their teammates through rowdy cheering and words of support. York’s team spirit was highly energetic… some may say too energetic, such as the referee, who warned the team to settle down or there would be consequences. As the fights progressed, York was gaining their lead, with Lancaster maintaining a close distance behind them. Ultimately, in an epic final showdown, York touchéd their way to the top, winning their tense fight 45- 41.
Women’s sabre was another nervously close event, as the scores fluctuated between York and Lancaster steadily throughout the fights. Both teams fought valiantly, with the quick- paced, slashing style of sabre making this a very entertaining watch. In the final match, tensions were high, as the score started off on close grounds, however, York held their nerve and performed beautifully, securing their victory of 45- 43. Over in men’s sabre, Lancaster stormed ahead in the first round, giving them an advantageous lead, which each fencer added onto as the rounds progressed. York fought very well, and held their own against an intimidating opposition, despite being behind points- wise. With lots of celebratory shouting after each point gained, the final fight was won by Lancaster, and they secured their victory with a score of 45-23.
The foil category, in my opinion, was the most exciting watch of the whole event, with York obtaining victories in both the men’s and women’s 1st teams. Men’s foil saw York take an immediate lead, which they maintained expertly throughout each fight. All fencers performed skilfully and calmly, keeping a significant distance ahead of Lancaster. Though Lancaster also performed very well, York had a definitive advantage points- wise, and claimed their victory with an amazing result of 45-27. The final match of the event came down to women’s foil, and it was an intense, heart- racing battle. Lancaster started off strong, securing a win in the first fight, however, York’s determination gave them a lead, which they kept throughout, despite a bent sword along the way! The final fight was the most nerve- wracking of them all, with the score being very close, however York sparred their way to the top and won an emotional victory of 45-42. With the final stab, tears of joy were shed, and York fencers rushed together to excitedly celebrate their victory. Men’s 1st and the women’s 1st both gained the overall victory, making it a very successful day of sword fighting for these Yorkshire warriors!
