North Yorkshire Police said an unoccupied car was shot by an unknown man while it was parked outside a home in Starkey Crescent, Tang Hall, at around 9.25 pm on Saturday, March 7th. The police believe it to have been a “targeted incident” with the suspect running away afterwards on foot.
Police are currently investigating the issue. They have assured the public that “no-one has been harmed [and there is] no threat to the wider community. However, we know that this will cause concern and fear among residents.”
One student witness, who was celebrating her 20th birthday with friends when she heard gunshots, said: “we thought the shots were fireworks.”
Another student living in the area expressed their fear upon finding out the news. They said, “we found out it was a shooting from a friend’s text. We made sure the doors were locked fast that night.”
Police remain in the area as part of reassurance patrols. They are looking to identify the suspect via house-to-house enquiries, and CCTV, doorbell, and dashcam footage. They are asking witnesses and those with any relevant recorded footage to come forward.
Tang Hall is a popular area for student renters from the University of York.
