Vision Says…
The attacks in Gallery this week show that racism in York is very much alive and kicking.
It’s easy to get cosy in our liberal campus bubble, but unfortunately despicable racist attitudes have made our lovely safe city a more threatening place to be.
In the same week that the BBC gave a platform to that cross-eyed bigot Nick Griffin, some of our students learned the hard way how nasty the BNP really are.
Vision is running the ‘The BNP Don’t Speak for Me’ campaign with York’s prospective MP – sign up on Facebook and show that the BNP MEP for Yorkshire does not speak in your name.

The students of Derwent have proved that they are not going to take the threatened closure of their bar lying down.
The bar has made a massive profit in the first few weeks of term, leaving Commercial Services looking pretty silly.
The huge turnout proves that students don’t want to lose their closest drinking hole. The fact that it took a crisis to flush them out of their bedrooms and down to the bar just shows that the Uni is not doing enough to attract them under ordinary circumstances.
Not being able to flog beer to students- that’s just one step away from not being able to organise a piss-up in a brewery!

YUSU’s plans for greater control of the press is bad news for York media.
It’s bad news for York students too – the people in power shouldn’t be able to doctor or censor what you read about them.
We are already bound by a restrictive Media Charter and more red tape will just tie our hands further.
Other unis have much more liberal media rules and it seems unfair that we have to jump through hoops that they don’t have to.
But this fight ain’t over yet- York media will be battling for its freedom over the coming weeks. We hope you will support us.
