Now I love Calvin Harris, but that’s mainly to do with how much fun it is to dance to some of his tracks in Gallery, so I was a little sceptical as to how this would translate in a live gig.
Calvin first burst onto the pop scene in 2007 with his debut album I Created Disco and from the off he was deemed as something special. His electro pop synth music mixed with brilliant 80s cheese was really quite different and the album featured manygreat tracks such as Acceptable in the 80s and Merrymaking at my Place. Ever since then he’s been churning out hit after hit while collaborating with the likes of Kylie Minogue with X and of course Dizzee Rascal and the infamous Dance Wiv Me.
Calvin started his set with Merrymaking at my Place which really got the audience going and then proceeded to drift from song to song, primarily playing tracks from the first album. He did play all my favourite classics including Colours but rather than playing the full album version he remixed them instead, sometimes with a heavy rock beat which completely changed the genre of the song. While I found this both interesting and refreshing, I did long to hear the original track.
I had a really great evening despite the slightly bruised ribs I got from being pushed around so much. Plus, Calvin is even more gorgeous in real life than on television and for 14 quid where can you go wrong?
