Artsy campus magazine Haus have reached new levels of artistic flair in this term’s upcoming issue.
Already a renowned publication at the University of York for their creative productions, this issue will feature an augmented reality front cover; a technology that brings up a 3D environment that the reader can interact with.
The cover will appear 2D with the cover star surrounded with swirling lights captured through delayed photography.
However, instead of the usual Haus logo there will simply be a Haus Barcode.
By holding up the cover to a web cam, readers can see the image transformed into a three-dimensional projection that can be controlled by moving it left and right, or closer or further away.
Haus are the first student magazine in the UK to have harnessed the power of augmented reality, something which Esquire magazine debuted earlier this year at a cost of £60,000. Presumably, Haus worked on a lower budget, using Microsoft Silver Light technology to create the augmented reality cover.
Readers will need to download the free software to use the feature, but Vision has been assured that it is easy to use, and worth the extra effort.
Magazine editor Maksymilian Fus Mickiewicz described how creating the cover was “a lot of organization but everyone’s getting a huge buzz out of its success.”
Previous publications of Haus have included fashion photoshoots, extended features and travel pages.
Last term’s issue also included an interview with Zoe Jervoise, who has been featured in Vogue.
