Marina and the Diamonds are set to headline this year’s Freshers’ Ball, it has been announced.
In a video published on Youtube, YUSU officers said that the act was booked to play for more than an hour on October 16th. Other acts for the event will be announced over the next couple of weeks.
However, YUSU have a history of acts falling ill on the same day they are due to perform. Last term N-Dubz pulled out of the Summer Ball at short notice, with Noisettes doing the same the year before. Wiley also infamously failed to turn up for Freshers’ Ball 2009 and Noah and the Whale did the same in 2008.
Freshers’ Ball will this year take place on campus, rather than York Racecourse, and promises to be “the biggest campus event the university has ever seen.” The event, which has been named ‘The Big Bang’ is being described as “YUSU’s answer to Freshers’ Ball.”
It will also be the first high-profile gig in Central Hall for around 25 years. Gigs were banned in Central Hall in 1985 after the Boomtown Rats encouraged students in the compulsory seating areas to dance.
Marina and the Diamonds’ songs include ‘Hollywood’, ‘I Am Not A Robot’ and ‘Oh No!’. She is due to release a new single, ‘Shampain’, less than a week before playing at the university.

Shampain is out in the UK on the 11th of October. 5 days before the Big Bang.
Lucky Marina. Free food, bed for the night, and you don’t even have to turn up.
Thanks for correcting :)
veronicas? no. that never happened.
what shocking reporting.
also gigs were never “banned”. they were just not advised due to health & safety.
