York student David Attwood has been selected to play for the England Under-25s bowls team. The third year Archaeology student  will compete in the British Isles Series in Ballymena, Northern Ireland in January.

He took part in a trial last weekend at Gedling Bowls Club near Nottingham and was chosen from 40 players who took part. Attwood, who represents Bridgwater BCL in his home county of Somerset, also plays for York and represents Yorkshire at U-25 and senior level.

The player, who moved from short-mat to long-mat bowls two and a half years ago, is also the Yorkshire U-25 pairs champion with local plumber Paul Humphries and recently qualified for the final stages of the U-25 national singles.

At hearing the news the bowls prodigy spoke to Vision about the call-up. “It is the culmination of years of hard work,” he said. “This makes up for the non-stop banter from flatmates who see bowls as an old man’s sport. Hopefully I can prove myself at this level and go on to more appearances in the future.”

Something of a sports prodigy, Attwood has also represented his college in a number of disciplines and is a former Wellington, Minehead and Chard Town FC goalkeeper. Vision will be following his progress at the tournament in January with exclusive reports from Ballymena.

Massive shame he’s chosen to go and watch a football match this Saturday rather than take part in the biggest club game of the season!
