Always Judge A Book By Its Cover – Twilight by Stephenie Meyer

Twilight-coverTwilight by Stephenie Meyer uses a well-known, powerful colour scheme – red, black and white – to draw attention. The red of the apple is daring, mysterious and almost sexual against the white hands, which are in turn contrasted against the harsh black background. Oddly,  the hands cradling the apple also reflect a delicate fragility, reminiscent of Adam and Eve’s fall from grace in the Bible. The Zephyr font used for the title is of Gothic script, implying that either the characters or the setting is of a different time. This style lent to a re-branding of classic literature under the HarperTeen name to entice the young adult demographic (shown below).
