Firstly, congratulations on making one of the best decisions of your life in coming to York. We are one of the UK’s best universities and consistently in the world’s top 100. More than that, York will provide you with limitless opportunities to make the most of your time at university whether that’s through joining one of our 140 societies, playing for one of our 60 sports clubs, getting involved in our numerous volunteering projects, raising money for charity by hitching to another country, organising huge college events, having some great nights out in town, or simply making some amazing friends.
To introduce myself, I’m Tim Ellis and I’m President of YUSU, the Students’ Union here at York. Every student automatically becomes a member of YUSU as soon as they enrol, and every student has a say in what YUSU does and how it works. Primarily, we work to defend the interests of students and provide the resources for students to develop while at university. Throughout the year we put on some huge events, making sure you’re having as much fun as possible while you’re here.
On top of that, YUSU also runs the best bar on campus: the Courtyard. This is open seven days a week during term time, serves drinks and hot food throughout the day, holds weekly events such as poker nights and bar quizzes and also shows all major sports fixtures on its 3D screens. Aside from the Courtyard, we are opening a completely new bar next to James College this October so keep an eye out! As well as our bars we also run Your:Shop, which sells food and drink, and lots of other essential items.
All that is left to be said is to get involved! In Freshers’ Week your college will be putting on tonnes of great events, and then you will be able to get a taste of things to get involved in at the massive Freshers’s Fair on the Saturday (a great chance to pick up loads of freebies and even grab some free pizza). After that, get ready for the biggest event on campus on the Sunday night. With multiple venues, great acts and over 3,000 students, you’re not going to want to miss this one (keep your eyes peeled for more info).
