Tuesday night saw the final round of University of York’s Band Soc’s Battle of the Bands 2023 at local music event and pub, The Fulford Arms, a lively venue that supports grassroot musicians and local artists.

Congratulations to Joe Haydon and the Ghost Ship, winners of Battle of the Bands 2023!

Battle of the Bands is one of the most successful student events of the academic year, previously winning the York University Student Union (YUSU) Activities Awards last year and the final round selling out almost immediately.

UoY BandSoc commented on the event, saying:

“Battle of the bands is that one event in the year which brings every musician out of the woodwork. There’s something special about a good old fashioned competition and with the amazing array of talent, amongst all genres of music, at this university it offers people a way to show off what they’ve got in front of a live audience on a fairly big scale. I think it offers a sense of validation to the bands and solo artists to actually realise how good they are and, if they put enough effort into their music, what they can achieve.”

A strong turnout yet again for York Uni’s biggest night of the year…

There was a strong turnout, with everyone there supporting and rooting for their favourite of 4 bands who have battled it out in the last two heats. The acts performing included: PH7, Tangerine Roulette, Luke George and Joe Haydon and the Ghost Ship. The venue was energetic and everyone was engaged – from the second PH7 went on stage, to the final performance from Joe Haydon and the Ghost Ship.

Congratulations to Joe Haydon and the Ghost Ship for winning the final heat of Battle of the Bands and winning a performance slot at the YUSU Summer Ball!

A Band Soc membership is £5 to cover the academic year, this allows you to attend all their ‘Meet and Jam’ sessions and hopefully find your own band. You never know, maybe it will be you next year winning the Annual Battle of the Bands!
