University to award 13 people with honorary degrees

University-of-york_central-hall-viewThirteen distinguished people are due to receive honorary degrees from the University during next week’s graduation ceremonies.

Those awarded range from the Bridget Jones author and screenwriter, Helen Fielding, to politician and campaigner, Lord Hague of Richmond, and Anglican bishop, Lord Rowan Williams.

Honorary degrees are awarded to people who have made a significant contribution to society.

Every year the university chooses who to award honorary degrees to based upon nominations from members of the University.

Receivers in previous years include author Anthony Horowitz in 2010, and England football manager Roy Hodgson last January.

Many of those in receipt of the award have ties to academic departments at the University or are York alumni.

The awardees shall receive their degrees in ceremonies on July 13, 14 and 15.

Professor Sir John Holman,  Emeritus Chair in the University of York’s Department of Chemistry, Helen Fielding, and Lord William Hague will receive their awards on July 13.

Professor Sir Ian Kennedy, a lawyer, Lord Victor Adebowale, charitable campaigner, ballerina Marguerite Porter, scientist Dr Patrick Vallance and educator Tony Cann will receive their awards July 14.

Lord Rowan Williams, actress Helen McCrory and scientists Comendador Augusto Sampaio, Professor David L Heymann, and Professor Tieniu Tan will be honored on July 15.
