The Men’s 2nd tennis team put in a fine performance to outclass their Lancaster opponents 12-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The first round of doubles saw York take the first set in each of the matches. Second seeds, Sam Francis and Tom Freeman made light work of their opponents winning 6-3 6-0. Their quick finish allowed them to marvel at the tennis on the first court where Captain Brad Hudson and his maverick tennis partner Paul Josse who finally wrapped up a 6-4 7-6 win. On Court 3 the ex York Tennis President Jonny Tait and his partner Alaistair Hunt maintained the winning start by beating their opponents 7-5 6-3.

With 3 out of the 9 matches won already, York had to only win 2 out of their 6 singles matches to claim the 2 points for York. Brad Hudson led from the front and finished off his counterpart 6-2 6-0. This turned the spectators attention to Court 1, where the top seed Paul Josse was faced with an opponent who refused to lie down or shut up. Angry confrontations were had over dubious line calls, but quality reigned and Paul triumphed 6-0 3-6 10-3.

York denied Lancaster any chance of a consolation win with the final four rubbers all won in emphatic style. German Lapins winning 7-5 6-4, Alaistair Hunt overcoming his opponent 6-1 6-7 6-0, Sam Francis achieving victory in straight sets 6-1 6-1 and last to finish Ben Sainsbury crossed the line with a 6-3 3-6 6-3 scoreline.

Unbelievably the team had only one BUCS fixture before today, Brad Hudson on winning 12-0 said he ‘would buy everyone a drink’. More performances like today’s and the club should enjoy a very merry season.
