Students were celebrating today after Met Office forecasters predicted temperatures to top 16 Celsius in York over the weekend.

The prediction would mean the city is as hot as Ibiza – where it also expected to be 16 Celsius – and make it the hottest day of the year so far.

But according to another weather station there is even better news in store as the mercury could soar to a staggering 19 Celsius on Sunday.

A Weather Channel UK forecaster said that the jet stream would be curving north this weekend, allowing temperatures to move way above the average of 9 Celsius for this time of year.

They added: “Maximums for the second week in March are usually 10C but we could get up to 19C.”

One student said they were planning a picnic for the occasion, adding: “I’m excited. It’s the first ray of sunshine this year.”

Another told Vision: “Forget Ibiza, this is where the party’s at. Strip off, get out the sangria and tan as we won’t have the scorching sun out like this for a good while.”

The increase in temperature comes as tensions rise ahead of the Liberal Democrat Spring Conference which is being hosted in the city this weekend.

Lib Dem Leader and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg was snapped just outside York at an engineering firm before entering his conference at the Barbican on Paragon Street this afternoon.

The conference is due to be greeted by students from the University who are preparing to march alongside the Trades Union Congress (TUC) tomorrow.

The unions are demonstrating against what they describe as “destructive” austerity measures being imposed by the Coalition Government.

But the University’s Liberal Democrats Society says that the party has had to make difficult decisions to “clean up Labour’s economic mess”.

The Deputy Prime Minister opened the conference by telling voters that his party were the party of “in” – a reference to the Liberal Democrats’ stance on the European Union as the MP for Sheffield Hallam prepares for a TV debate with UKIP leader Nigel Farage next month.
