Sport in Focus: UYNC

UYNC is a club of about 30 girls who love to play netball, training approximately three times a week with matches every Wednesday. They enter three teams each year into the British Universities and College Sports (BUCS) league.

UYNC had a fairly successful season last year. Both the first and third teams remained comfortably middle table, whilst the second team were the most successful, missing out on promotion by only three points.

The first team were placed in a tough league and even drew 50-50 with a very strong Sheffield University team, a game which will never be forgotten. Despite being unsuccessful (just) in both Varsity and Roses, they performed extremely well in the BUCS Northern Conference Cup reaching the final sixteen. With the strong leadership of Nina Pullman, First Team Captain, this team can only get stronger. They are aiming for promotion and it is possible.

The second team, the ‘Super Seconds’, have a fantastic team spirit which was reflected in their results. Being successful in Varsity was a highlight of the season but losing to Lancaster has certainly put fire in their bellies for next season. Being so close to promotion has motivated the team to make the dream of promotion a reality.

The team with the most improvement was the third team.  Being made up of mostly freshers or new members to the club, their development as a team is even more remarkable. The highlight of the season was their win at Varsity, a time when the team really pulled together. There are high hopes for the third team this year.

Amy Moll, President, outlined her aspirations for the coming season. “My main aims for the club are of course to defeat our Lancaster rivals at Roses and our Hull rivals at Varsity. I also want to keep providing the club with exciting opportunities, the first of which is our coaching session with ex-England player Tracey Neville in the York Sport Union pre-season week

The session with Tracey Neville went extremely well. The team were given new practices and tips from Tracey on how to improve their game. With this under their sleeve, the teams are eager that this will be their most successful season yet.

UYNC are eager to bring in a large fresher intake this year, and there are great opportunities for freshers in this club. Look out for them at the Fresher’s Fair by the netball posts. They will be happy to answer any questions there, or you can email them at [email protected].

The initial trials are on Sunday 14th October from 2-5pm in the sports tent and call-backs will be on Monday 15th October from 6-8pm. Our first games are scheduled for Wednesday 17th October.

Give it a go, you won’t regret it.
