Roses indoor women’s football 2nds: Lancaster 8-0 York

York found themselves on the end of an unfortunate result today as a strong Lancaster side gave them a footballing lesson.

York started well in Roses 2012’s first indoor football fixture, applying pressure high up the pitch. Rose Hooks stole possession and released a quick snap shot that forced a good save from Lancaster’s keeper.

The first goal came against the run of play when Lancaster’s no. 16 shot into the bottom corner from an intercepted clearance. Although the game remained even it was not long before Lancaster doubled their lead when their no. 3 struck hard into the top corner. Lancaster completed a quick fire double when no. 22 broke free, stealing possession after kick off to finish off a swift counter attack.

York goalkeeper Lucinda Cowling was called upon a number of times as the pressure built from Lancaster, making a string of impressive saves before brilliant vision from Lancaster’s no. 22 threaded 17 clear through on goal, who scored only for it to be disallowed for the shot being taken in the ‘D’. 17 made up for her mistake soon after with an assured finish after finding space with quick feet. Another great finish from Lancaster’s no. 3 on the stroke of halftime made it 5-0.

York started the second half with intent once again, with Savannah Green intercepting a wayward Lancaster pass and finding space out wide, only just failing to cut the ball back to the unmarked Nikita Pickard. York’s Holly Knott showed good skill to get off a snap shot in confined space which tested Lancaster’s keeper.

York continued to apply pressure but could not find the goal they deserved and Lancaster stuck the knife in deeper when Holly Knott was dispossessed after taking the ball forward from defence, leaving a gap behind her which was exploited by no. 17, enabling her the time to slot home. Within a minute 17 had scored again and come close a third time to make it 7-0 after York’s concentration lapsed.

Although Holly Knott provided some relief, slowing down play whilst in possession, the damage had been done; it was now just a case of damage limitation. Lancaster rounded off the scoring at 8-0 on a disappointing day for York, who were outpaced for periods of the game as poor concentration cost them.
