Looper is the sort of breathtakingly original film that is destined to become a cult classic in the near future. This is only Rian Johnson’s third film and he manages to instil a kinetic swagger to proceedings that make Looper not only stylish, but also extremely entertaining. 
What makes this better than the average science fiction film is the sheer scope of what it explores. Through one relatively simple time-travelling concept, Johnson succeeds in examining the themes of identity, maternity and destiny, all while maintaining a complex plot that never seems far-fetched despite the time-travelling subject. The world Johnson creates is one of dystopia but not exaggeratedly so. The cars are dirty and the streets are dark but without the campness so common in recent underwhelming science-fiction efforts such as the increasingly dreadful Terminator franchise.
Along with 2010’s Source Code, Looper indicates that sci-fi is enjoying renewed success with talented filmmakers coming up with dazzling concepts that will be enjoyed by all. A must see.
