The War of the Roses was reignited today after it emerged that Lancaster had finally beat York – taking the top prize on the spending of beauty products.

Female students at the Lancashire-based institution spend an average of £1,109 a year on skin care ranges compared with those at York who fork out an annual budget of £968.

This news will come as small consolation prize to Lancaster who currently trail behind York  in the annual Roses sporting competition 25-23 to York with 1 draw.

The research, carried out by online beauty retailer Escentual.com, found Lancaster and York coming first and second respectively out of 200 institutions across the UK.

Spending at Lancaster University per term was also highest at £370, whilst those at York spend an average of £323.

But on class, students at York came out higher, preferring to indulge in luxury products from Clarins and Dior.

The most sought after product across all universities was Avene Eau Thermale Spring Water Spray, with students splashing a total of £14,382 on the product in the last year.

Students at the University of Southampton, the University of Manchester and the University of Bristol also featured in the top ten at £741, £691 and £653 a year respectively.

The highest levels of spending on fragrances, make-up and skin products came from Russell Group universities, with seven of the top ten places being secured by these elite institutions.

The least prolific spenders came from students at Derby and Bath Spa.
