JCRC Election Roundup

Vision recaps the released JCRC election results, tells you who’s in the running for those positions still open and talks to the outgoing chairs about their experiences of and hopes for the JCRC Committees.

Confirmed Election Results

VANBRUGH

Vanbrug’s new JCRC Chair has been announced as Kallum Taylor, with Sajni Shah and Laura Trewick as Vice-Chairs.

Taylor told Vision that being elected so convincingly as Vanbrugh Chair was “both humbling and exciting.”

“We’re a large, proud and active college and I intend to build on this with the efforts of our new, fresh committee and our general students.”

He also added that his priority now is to build a ‘team’ feel amongst the new members as soon as possible, so the JCR can “hit the ground running in style after Christmas.”

Outgoing Chair Tahir Shetty commented that he wants the new committee to “see Vanbrugh cementing its place at the top” and particularly wants RAG totals and volunteering figures to increase

GOODRICKE

Nacho Hernando Serrano was named Chair of Goodricke JCRC at the college’s election results party at Yates last Tuesday. He is joined by Vice-Chair (Services) Hannah Colbourne and Vice Chair Peter Sharpe.

Outgoing Chair Tim Ellis commented, “Nacho is bringing a lot of experience to the role, as well as some great ideas and enthusiasm. What I would like to see him do most is get even more participation in JCRC campaigns and student involvement in college and university issues. We’re still in the process of losing the porters from our college nucleus, coupled with bigger problems such as tuition fee rises, and the best way to tackle these things is with a united student body.”

DERWENT

Matt Jenkins told Vision he was “extremely excited to have been voted Chair of Derwent’s JCRC,” beating Freddy Harris to the post. Ben Woolley and Greg Brocklehurst were elected into the hotly contested position of Vice-Chair.

In reference to the upcoming expansion into the Langwith blocks, Jenkins commented that “there is much to look forward to in Derwent, and I look forward to leading a committee that ensures we maximise these changes so that Derwent remains the best college on campus.”

Outgoing Chair Holly Burton echoed his sentiments, saying they will have to work hard, “ensuring that the close-knit college community and spirit is maintained despite the addition of many more students.”

And The Rest…

JAMES

THE results of the James College JCRC elections will be announced at the college’s Christmas Ball on December 14, with voting closing this Friday. Fighting for the position of Chair are current RAG Rep Kate Davey and Merchandise Rep Emma Bartlett.

Their predecessor, Tim Green, has said that one of the biggest challenges he faced was the perceived lack of college spirit in James College, and both candidates have built upon this in their campaigns.

Davey wants the JCRC to become more ambitious with college events, assigning an official team member to be in charge of sponsorships, whilst Bartlett wishes to increase college spirit, and aims for James to win the RAG cup this year.

ALCUIN

Alcuin Chair has only one candidate, English Literature second year Lizzie Bartholomew. She has previous experience as Entertainment Officer, and plans to write blogs of JCRC updates to encourage college participation.

Jane Catterall and Francesca Isherwood are running uncontested for Vice Chair (Business and Services) and Vice Chair (Welfare) respectively.

Outgoing Chair Ollie Todd has said he would like to see the new Chair place bigger emphasis on socials as a way of encouraging college spirit.

When asked what advice he would give to his successor he told Vision, “don’t let stuff get to you, things go wrong as well as going right and it’s all part of the experience.”

HALIFAX

The Halifax elections for the position of President are turning out to be some of the most hotly contested in the HCSA’s history. Voting began yesterday, and Halifax students have five candidates to choose from; Pav Dhande, Arthur Barrow, Daveds Mootanah, Byron Karemba and Ozge Bektasoglu.

The most controversial proposal was that of Byron Karema, who suggested that an overhaul of the HCSA system would remove the “problem” of YUSU and give Halifax students greater control over events.

Outgoing Chair Lydia Blundell wants the incoming Chair to “continue the success of our events and build up a reputation in the other colleges; it would be really great to see Fax go from strength to strength.”

LANGWITH

The contest for Langwith JCRC Chair is this year between Cem Turhan, Andy Green and Tom Bourne, all of whom were on the JCRC last year, Tom and Andy as Bar Reps, Cem as LGBT Rep.

Voting has now closed, and results for all JCRC positions will be announced at the Langwith Christmas Ball, held tonight in the York Pavillion Hotel.

Last year’s Chair Connor Wilcock has said that he hopes whoever does succeed him will, “do a much better job than me at making the JCRC less clique-y – it’s something I tried to do but probably failed in my efforts!”

He also told Vision he would advise them to delegate to other JCRC members rather than let their degree suffer.

  1. Great to see some decent JCRC coverage. However, the new Goodricke vice-chair is called Hannah Colbourne and Halifax have a President, not Chair.

  2. As Tim says, its good to see the media finally taking some interest in what the colleges are doing! It’s a shame that they don’t cover more of the work colleges do throughout the year.
