Injury and disruption on University Road

UPDATED

A road collision near the library has left a student in hospital, and caused delays to the bus services on University road.

A 20 year old man was hit by a number 4 Ftr Double Decker bus at around 6 p.m yesterday evening. The incident occurred close to the University’s Security Hut.

Vision has since spoken to the student involved who described his lucky escape from more serious injury as “a miracle really”. He joked about yesterday’s events saying he was currently “a bit bruised and achey”.

A University Spokesperson has since confirmed that the University is currently in the process of improving safety outside University Road:

“The University is seeking to enhance safety in this location and has persuaded the highway authority, City of York Council,  to install a pedestrian crossing as well as moving the bus stops on University Road further apart,” he stated.

According a North Yorkshire Police spokesperson, the man was “concious and breathing” with “minor abrasions and perhaps concussion.” He also said that when the police arrived, paramedics were already on the scene  and he was later taken to York District Hospital.

Georgia Ferguson, a first year History student told Vision that one of the bus’ tyres had burst, perhaps as a result of a Bicycle on the scene. The bus’ windscreen was smashed as well, but FTR have refused to comment on the incident.

A University Duty porter on the scene said, “rumour has it the whole road was closed off… I’m just happy to be able to get home now”. A number of emergency vehicles arrived on campus in response.

By 7.30 p.m, there was little evidence of the drama at the scene of the accident. However, large crowds of students were still waiting for transportation as bus services began to normalise.

  1. It wasn’t a cyclist and he’s still in a and e getting checked over. Only a graze to the arm- luckily!

  2. ‘I’m just happy to be able to get home now.’ – Cunt. Someone could have died.

  3. … so hang on.

    What actually did happen?
All I can gather from the story (and the first comment)

‘A bus hit someone who may have been on a bike and a road may have been closed’

    CONFUSED.

  4. Standard porter behaviour there. ‘Ooooohhh look some rich kid with prospects gets hurt but I dont care because I’m a miserable porter with no life prospects so I hope he dies.’ I completely agree with James Carney….if only one could tag people in these comments.

  5. The unfortunate guy was a pedestrian, not a cyclist. I should know because I was on the bus. All credit to the porters, they were there within seconds to help him and call an ambulance. Also, I didn’t think there was that much damage to the bus but I could have been mistaken.

  6. THERE WAS NO BIKE. THE BIKE IN QUESTION AT THE SCENE BELONGS TO SOMEONE ELSE!

  7. Corrections and updated – areas of uncertainty from yesterday have been cleared up. I’m waiting for a quote from Laura Borisovaite, YUSU Welfare officer, but otherwise hope that’s all ok!

  8. Gimli, Son of Gloin have some class, your comment is extremely tacky. for many working class people that job would be considered very good so no, they’re probably not jealous of you. they’re probably fully aware of how you think (and unfortunately, students like you as it is commonplace) and treat you accordingly. if you’re cheery and polite to porters, they’ll treat you amazingly. it’s about mutual respect. i know in this instance the quote was unacceptable but if you’re making blanket statements so will i.

not everybody (esp of the porters’ generation…) is able to go to university. you are privileged to have been raised in a home where that’s a career you can look your down your nose at, and where you see university education as a norm. acknowledge that, students like you make my skin crawl.

  9. Poorly written, non story. I think the writer will agree, let’s just stop writing these?

  10. So a minor colision with a pedestrian smashed a windscreen and burst a tyre… who was he!? Iron Man?

  11. No burst tyre either.

Fucking idiots want to concentrate on their studies and stop playing at poor mans journo’s

  12. Bob, don’t be so nasty. York has great student journalists. So much so, you came to this site looking for Uni of York news. If you’re going to insult them, don’t use their services!

(Just like to point out I’m not a “poor mans journo”)

  13. As the initial 29th May Bob I would like to point out that I am not the hateful 30th May Bob!
    Nor am I Fabian Brooks…

  14. ‘Bob, don’t be so nasty. York has great student journalists’

    Burst tyre – false

Large crowds at 1930 – false

As for my visit, the proper journos on Facebook linked me over ;o)
