College netball: James 23-8 Derwent

It was a comfortable performance that gave James a win and allowed them to top the netball league on Sunday.

James had a strong start, converting their own centre and then turning Derwent’s centre also through Samantha Hall’s calm shooting.

With fast play in the centre court there where knocks and tips everywhere, but it was Derwent who had to do the majority of the defence work, as James were dominating and building a lead.

Derwent stayed strong and had slick passes but struggled making headway into the circle and the half ended 11-3 to James.

At the re-start, Derwent showed what they where capable of with a goal straight away from Amy Goodfellow. With movement and fast play everywhere, loose balls where up for grabs and it was James who took advantage of these, extending their lead even further as the half went on.

Derwent’s main problem was converting their shots, as great leans from Rebecca Pay-Savage at James goal defence put off the Derwent shooters. Nevertheless, Derwent did keeping fighting against a determined James side but unfortunately lost 23-8.

The James captain at the end commented after the game: “It was a brilliant win against a strong Derwent side. I’m so proud of the girls for winning today.”
