Halifax and Derwent secured 7-3 wins against Langwith and Vanbrugh respectively in Sunday’s college badminton matches.
Halifax had the upper hand early on in some close games. A strong performance from Ian White and Yan Lau saw off Andrew Grantham and Huan Ting-Ang 21-4, but the next 3 matches were close enough to go either way, with Halifax just taking the upper hand to take a 3-0 lead.
Langwith pair Al Qasyaff & Sarah Howarth responded in style with a 21-11 win over Halifax’s Piers Whipp.
Meanwhile over at the Vanbrugh vs. Derwent match, one of the closest matches I’ve seen a while was taking place. Both teams were going point for point right to the end.
The most notable perfomances definitely go to Simon Pierce and Rosie Barnett of Vanbrugh for beating Emma Benson and Mike Taylor 22-20 in a well thought match that could have really gone either way.
Emma and Mike, clearly enraged from their close defeat earlier, Mike and Emma fought to redeem themselves in a great 22-20 victory against Vanbrugh pair Joe Devonport and Blonnie Walsh.
Back over with Langwith vs. Halifax, defeat had been confirmed with Halifax taking a 5-1 lead. Langwith now playing for pride, not points. Halifax captain John Sinclair was keen to point out at this point that his rival, Cassandra Brown had predicted a 6-4 Langwith win…awkward.
Cassandra Brown and her partner Abel Sow remained unfazed and took a prideful win off Halifax rivals Lucy and Piers.
John Sinclair’s pair of the match went to Ian White and Yan Lau, in particular for Ian’s cross court smashes that won so many points. Final score, Halifax 7 – Langwith 3.
So what of Vanbrugh vs. Derwent? Points meant prizes for Derwent as they held it together to beat Vanbrugh. 7-3. Jon Hill and Clara How taking the final victory for Derwent in another ridiculously close match, beating Simon and Rosie 22-20. This game could really have gone either way, so 10 out of 10 to both teams for a really good match. And well done to Derwent for the win!
