Clubbing Culture: Fibbers

FibbersFibbers, the perfect location to release your inner-hipster, holds many different nights for varying music tastes and genres (which totes sound different from each other). Fibbers can be taken over by students to put on their own nights making it the home of many of our campus DJs. As a result it is a good place to go to escape the repeats of Labrinth that you will find in every other club in York. With the student-run nights usually on a Monday, it fills what is one of the few nights off from student nights (after Sunday Revs and before Tuesday Kuda) and will more often than not knock you out for the next day. Taking place in a disorientating basement-esque room this is potentially the only place in York where requesting Gangnam Style is unacceptable.

What you’ll see in your flashbacks: The 90s. But this time it’s cool.

The Fibbers-going girl: Crop top and high tops on, denim optional the Fibbers girl will last longer than on any other day of week now there are no heels, cobbles or steep stairs to negotiate. Tonight the dancing gets more Florence Welch than Coyote Ugly and regardless of her playlist she’s definitely a huge house fan.

The Fibbers-going boy: With better dance moves than the girls, the Fibbers boy is the most fun and (generally) least prone to sharking out of all the boys at York. Maybe partly due to his limited idea of what is going on around him there’ll be no sitting on the edge sending bedroom eyes to someone across the room, he’s down there and for one night only he’s back in the dance tent at Bestival.

Most embarrassing Fibbers memory: I’m not worried by embarrassing memories at Fibbers, mainly because I don’t have many memories of it at all. It’s more the evidence that remains afterwards. This evidence comes in the common form of photos or the less common angry message from an ex-fling the next day, making clear I wasn’t as hilarious as I clearly thought I was.

Strangest Fibbers memory: Discovering a whole new room that I didn’t know existed behind the bar area.

Famous for: Making York think it’s edgy and cool for one night a week.

Close points of interest: Pretty close to campus (via Waitrose) it is within easy walking distance especially for those living on Lawrence Street. There is also a taxi rank and bus stop right outside it as well as The Duchess (Phat Fridays anyone?) a few doors down.

A regular describes Fibbers in three words: “grotty grime hive”

What to wear: On Monday night androgynous turns hot. Minimal clothing is necessary but what is there should be effortless. No push up bras or fake eyelashes will be found around here.
