‘Boris Bike’-style scheme coming to campus

A ‘Boris Bike’-style bicycle hire scheme looks set to reach the University of York by early 2014, in new plans announced by City of York Council.

The City of York is paying £200,000 for a trial scheme that will see 138 cycles for hire at 38 different sites around the city, including University sites.

York is already the 8th most bike friendly campus in the country; this development is likely to push the university even higher in the rankings

In London, where a similar scheme has been in place since 2010, Bike Hire costs £2 for 24 hours, £10 for a week and £90 for annual usage of unlimited journeys of up to 30 minutes.

YUSU President Kallum Taylor is enthusiastic about the prospect, “It’s really great to see this finally confirmed. We placed our full backing behind the idea at the recent Student Community Partnership meeting, alongside the city’s other Students’ Unions to the City Council. It’ll be a useful addition to York, and something which I think many of our students will make the most of too.”

Ursula Wild, a third year English student, was positive about the introduction of the scheme, “I think it’ll be a good thing, York’s so tiny that you can easily get anywhere within 30 minutes, and compared to the price of a new bike, £90 is nothing for a year of bike use!”

Joshua Treacy, Vanbrugh Chair, is also looking forward to it, “I’m really glad the council made the brave move to copy the capital. It should prove York’s position as the most pleasant city in the country. I hope it pays off.” but added, “I am interested to see how well students resist the temptation to ride them home after a night out.”

  1. £2 for 24 hours or £10 for a day? Last time I checked, 24 hours was a day?

  2. Hi! Thanks for pointing that out, it has now been corrected to ‘week’.

  3. So can we take them home so long as we return them at a later date?
