Bokwa

You may have heard of Zumba but have you ever tried Bokwa fitness? All you fitness gurus, new year resolution keenos and those  amongst us who think exercise is just too tedious and dull, here is a new fitness class to get you inspired. It’s a new dance fitness craze that‘s taking over America (must be good then!) What does it entail I hear you ask, well it combines cardio conditioning, strength training and flexibility. So basically one class combines a run, a gym weight session and yoga- 3 for the price of one you might say. It also incorporates customary African dance moves- bring something new to Duchess on Phat Fridays! The origins of this new class come from the combination of light boxing “Bo” and traditional Kwaito dancing “Kwa”. One example exercise step is :-

Under hook punch left, under hook punch right. Diagonal double step right, half kick (bent knee) jump and back, diagonal double step left, half kick jump and back. Finally booty shake as you sing along to the upbeat party anthem. Do you think you can keep up?

Now personally I love fitness classes, I think it’s a great way to stay healthy and is far more social than a cross trainer, but my coordination levels are non existent. This however, is not a problem because Bokwa Fitness steps have been specially designed using numbers, letters and words. It might be a challenging workout but it can be adjusted to meet the fitness levels of anyone. A certified fitness instructor and dancer, Paul Mavi, created Bokwa Fitness in 2000. Mavi claims “The magic of it all is something called click-click. Click-click is a two-step that you do that actually changes in the next step or move forward. It allows you to know where you’re going.” This is not an A- list or personal instructor exclusive new fitness craze. Sessions have been conducted on beaches (as some rather hilarious YouTube videos can testify) and a Bokwa DVD will soon be available to purchase. Instead of reading about this new class, I’d recommend searching for your local class and joining in the body toning party. You can feel the energy just by watching. Bokwa is definitely a lean, mean exercise routine. You’ll be dancing yourself into shape in no time.

  1. I’ve been doing Bokwa for a few weeks now. Our instructor has classes in Ferryhill, Chilton and Trimdon and I’ve attended them all. I absolutely LOVE Bokwa! Until then I was getting fatter and more out of shape. Bokwa has changed my life for the better and I’m completely addicted to it. If you haven’t tried it yet, get to a class and give it a go.
