Behind Bars: Bars in the Swinegate and Stonegate areas

Lucia’s Wine Bar and Grill may be one place worth visiting for the student in need of a revitalising night out, particularly after a few too many intoxicated stumbles up the stairs to the infamous Willow Restaurant, and appearance of a jaded complexion at the weekly Rich and Famous photoshoot; as seen tagged promptly on Facebook.

Nestled in the heart of Swinegate, a stone’s throw from other worthwhile haunts such as the newly-styled Latino Bobo Lobo bar and the (albeit overpriced) Blind Swine, Lucia’s reigns supreme for those craving the heady atmosphere of holiday.

Buzzing, yet relaxed, the heated courtyard (complete with jazzy blankets for the more cold-blooded amongst us) offers an oasis of fiesta and calm – not far from the high street and worlds away from the library. The Mediterranean menu caters for your taste buds whilst the extensive wine and cocktail list ensures an appropriate and enjoyable level of tipsiness.

You will be ready to move upstairs to Bar Esperanza upstairs for more, or directly opposite to sample Bora Bora’s 25 cocktails in the order of your preference. Tonight the hangover is optional, and you may leave well fed and contented, and perhaps at least for a short time that deadline may seem achievable!

Stonegate is also a fantastic place to get a drink if you have a bit of cash to splash. You’ll no doubt be hearing a lot about Evil Eye, arguably the best place to get a cocktail in York, and EvilEyeLoungeYorkapparently Johnny Depp’s favourite bar in England.

It’s also popular for dates, as it has dimmed lights which make everyone look attractive and the cocktails are large and good to nurse whilst flirting with your beau. They are around £6 but they are massive and really alcoholic- don’t drink too much or you’ll end up doing what I did and getting too tipsy and trying to drag your date to Willow whilst crying about your dead cat. Not a joke.

It also has beds upstairs to sit upon if you’re that way inclined.

The House of Trembling Madness is another staple if you like beer. They do beers from all around the world, different ones all the time, and lots are reasonably priced and the decor is gorgeous- it looks like a medieval tavern. They also serve hearty food, which is to die for.

Their main selling point- or should I say pint- is their beer selection, I don’t think that you can find a better selection of ales in York.
