Langwith cruised to a 4-0 win over Heslington East rivals Goodricke to claim their first points of the season. In a bottom of the table clash, it was the men in yellow who came out on top, earning an important victory in the battle to avoid relegation.

First-half goals from Dyaus Gohil-Patel, Jack Parsonson, and Alex Chaimo put Langwith in control, with winger Matt Morton adding another in the second period to secure the victory. Goodricke, while showing good energy and endeavour, failed to really threaten Le Cornu between the Langwith sticks.

The game began at a fast pace, with both teams guilty of wasting free kicks from good positions. It only took 11 minutes for Langwith to make the breakthrough however, with Jack Parsonson riding a couple of challenges before slipping Gohil-Patel right through the middle, and he obliged with a calm finish.

Gohil-Patel, dangerous throughout, nearly doubled his tally on 19 minutes. Receiving the ball in the box, he turned and attempted to curl the ball into the far corner, but Goodricke keeper Woolley was up to the task and pulled off an acrobatic diving save.

Langwith’s lead was finally doubled on 32 minutes, with Parsonson converting from the spot after Miguel Vidal was obstructed as he tried to burst through the middle.

Ope Teffy was a constant menace for Langwith, his pace causing the Goodricke defence problems. A strong run past two players gave him a decent shooting chance but he wasn’t able to take it, blasting over the bar. Gohil-Patel had another opportunity to bag a brace and slotted home beautifully first time, but the flag was raised for offside.

Langwith were to go into the break 3-0 up, after centre-back Chaimo scored from a corner. The Goodricke defence failed to clear the ball and after a scramble it fell nicely to Chaimo who swiveled and planted a volley into the side netting, a brilliant finish.

Matters were to get worse for Goodricke after the break, as James Lewis limped off injured with no one to replace him. 3-0 down and reduced to 10 men, Goodricke put in a big shift during the second period to limit the damage to 4 goals.

The final goal came on the hour mark through winger Matt Morton. Marcus Campbell played him through beautifully and his initial effort was saved by Woolley, but the ball found its way towards the line and was smashed home by Morton at the second time of asking.

Victorious captain Tom Benney was content with his team’s performance and positive about avoiding relegation: ‘We started quite brightly. First half we played well but then in the second half we got a bit complacent after going in 3-0 up. Obviously can’t complain about the result, it was a bottom of the table clash and a good win for us’

Opposing skipper Aaron Sullivan was proud of the heart shown by his team but lamented a poor first half performance: ‘It was an awful first half from us, we let them control the game, score some easy goals and heads went down. After we went down to 10 men the work rate was unbelievable from the boys and I can’t fault any of them for putting in that kind of work. We just need to find that hunger from the start when we have 11 men and I’m sure we’ll be fine’
