Derwent Triumphant in College Futsal Cup

On Sunday the annual Futsal College Cup kicked off with teams from Alcuin, James, Goodricke, Vanbrugh, Wentworth, Derwent and Halifax fighting for the trophy.

This was a one day tournament where teams were split into two groups with the top two teams in each group going through to the semi finals.

Group A was composed of James, Alcuin and Vanbrugh with Alcuin and James progressing to the semis with 6 points and 3 points respectively.

In Group B were reigning champions Halifax alongside Derwent, Goodricke and Wentworth. Derwent were impressive with Josh Bew, Ryan Gwinnett and Eddie Fotheringham linking up well and helping Derwent to win all 3 of their games with ease. Halifax, Goodricke and Wentworth were all tied with 3 points but Goodricke progressed due to their superior goal difference.

Goodricke then went on to face Alcuin in the semis where they took a 3-0 lead early on and looked set for the finals. However Alcuin fought back impressively to draw 6-6, with the game then going straight to penalties. There were a few questionable penalties from both sides but Alcuin ultimately emerged victorious after winning 4-3 on pens. Alcuin would then meet Derwent in the final after Derwent continued their impressive form to beat James 5-1 in the other semi.

Despite Derwent’s dominance throughout the tournament they found themselves 2-1 down at half time and a cup upset looked on the cards. However they came out flying in the second half with Eddie Fotheringham’s left foot strike drawing the team’s level. They then went on to dominate the second half with goals from Trant, Gwinnett, Ferrao and Sutton sealing an impressive 6-2 win which saw them win the tournament.

Fotheringham’s impressive performances throughout saw him earn Player of the Tournament, whilst Alcuin’s McConnell and Vanbrugh’s Carruthers were also standout players. Overall it was a great event with Derwent emerging as deserving champions.
