Review: Creditors

Creditors by August Strindberg is a play ideally suited to radio adaptation. With crackling dialogue and dynamic characters, it makes very easy listening for those wanting to find a way to pass the time on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

The play itself is about Adolph, who has a conversation with a man named Gustav about how he suspects his wife of infidelity and seeks his advice on how he should confront the issue but Gustav has another agenda in mind. It demonstrates the power of language in creating insecurities and weakness in us. Strindberg was a master playwright capable of creating a naturalistic environment on stage and director, Lewis Gray, also proves its suitability for the radio.

The cast do a good job in creating realistic characters through subtle changes in mood and tone. Dan Wood especially seemed to grasp his characters motives and charms. Last year, he played the title character in the Drama Barn’s production of ‘Butley’ in one of the finest performances I’ve seen there. Georgia Bird and Ryan Lane also give great performances and the exchange between them following the Gustav conversation is one of the highlights of the play.

‘Creditors’ is definitely worth a listen and will be aired on URY today at 2pm and is available on demand via the URY Player.
