On Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th January, artist Dan Axon brought his latest exhibition to Earworm Records, situated in Powell’s Yard off Goodramgate, to discuss and celebrate one of the most iconic pieces of equipment in the electronic music scene – the Technics SL-1200 and its successors.

As Dan himself states, “There are very few examples of perfectly designed and engineered products. The Technics SL-1200mk2 is one.” Dan himself is one of those rare people who can speak with authority on the subject after working for Linn, one of the most recognised high end audio companies in the industry, before becoming a freelance designer and artist. His industry knowledge has given him an appreciation and encompassing knowledge of both product design and aesthetics.

Earworm Records itself is the perfect location to display such an exhibition. Both Rich and Paul who run the store have worked the local and national music scene, running the York based house night Freakin’, automatically qualifying them as appreciators of the Technics legacy. Dan himself agreed that choosing Earworm was a good idea; “We counted over 200 people through the door over the two days.”

In regards to the reception of the exhibition, “The response was very positive and it’s really encouraged me to follow my instincts with future work I choose, rather than do something more conventional next. I have some pretty progressive concepts that I’m developing.”

The exhibition is being displayed in several more venues in the future:

Glasgow – Rubadub Records, 2nd March.

Leeds – Outlaws Yacht Club, Sunday 9th March.

There will be further shows in Manchester and then possible shows in London, Newscastle and Northampton.

Limited signed and framed prints of the work will be available at Earworm Records.
