Dr Sketchy’s in York: The alternative art movement

dr sketchysNext week sees the return of the world-famed ‘alternative drawing movement’ to York, in the form of Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School.

It’s life drawing, but not as you know it. The pretentious art teacher giving vague instruction, the hipsters clutching their sketchbooks, the rigid model on the wrong side of 50 and the sombre atmosphere are nowhere to be found. Instead, Dr. Sketchy’s treats you to a night of music, cabaret and thrill, with incredible variety amongst the performers and attendees alike.

The Rocky Horror Show themed musical event will star the kooky Dr Frank ‘n’ Furter, with the whole gang posing, dancing and singing in a celebration of their most recent scientific achievements. You’re invited to don a suitable costume and illustrate the entire show, as well as have a few drinks and a sing-along if you’re so inclined. Art supplies are provided, but feel free to bring your own. Any level of talent is welcomed, from stick-figure specialists to professional portraitures. Prizes are also up for grabs for the best (or most interesting) artwork produced, so make sure you bring your artistic A-game!

Dr. Sketchy’s provides a refreshing take on the life drawing concept, which in the past I’ve found static and daunting. The show’s raucous atmosphere and quirky twist, in my opinion, is a complete improvement on the old format. Whether you’re looking to advance your artistic skills or just have a great, unique night out, Dr. Sketchy’s is not to be missed. ‘Dr Sketchy’s York presents The Rocky Horror Sketchy Show!’ takes place in the City Screen Basement at 8pm on Tuesday, 26th November. Entry is £7 if pre-ordered on the City Screen website, or £8 on the door. More information can be found on the Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/events/332248706912033/
