Tokyo SCRAPPED in favour of Mansion as YUSU’s Thursday club night

tokyoTokyo has been scrapped as the official YUSU Thursday club night, in favour of Mansion.

Kallum Taylor blogged about the decision, which was based on access, how likely they were to comply with the new Nightsafe Scheme, and JCRCs opinions.

He addressed criticisms of how the process went ahead, saying: “In the past we’ve been accused of deliberately leaving certain venues and companies out, which is simply not true, it’s just that in the past clubs and promotions companies approach us… Rather than the other way around.

“This needed tightening up – big time – and given the strength, value and popularity of the Official YUSU Club Nights we knew we’re in a very strong position to get the process by the scruff of the neck.

“By inviting everyone able to pull any such night off, the competition increased dramatically, and we really were aiming to mix it up as much as possible – being able to receive some new, different and unexpected nights and ideas. We certainly had that.”

Taylor was “sad to be missing out” as he is leaving York next year and said:

“Following a BIG RE-FURB, huge demand from students and an already strong following for its very different, underground and on trend feel, we’ll be taking THURSDAY NIGHTS to MANSION!”

Students were excited about the change, with second year Caitlin Graham admitting: “To me it was obvious that Tokyo would get cut, I haven’t been once this year except in Fresher’s Week. It hasn’t had any appeal.

She added: “In terms of Mansion as the new Thursday, I will be interested to see what they offer after losing out to Salvo last year which have had an incredible year.”

In response to the change of venue, first year Tom Murray added: “I appreciate being closer to the station for a quick getaway with my legally acquired goods.”

He clarified: “The legally acquired goods are women.”

Tokyo came under fire last year, and lost popularity with JCRCs after failing to pay owed money. Concerns have also been raised about the new strip club planned for upstairs at Tokyo.

The other club nights are remaining the same, but changes will be made on campus, with a termly LGBTQ friendly club night. Water will be given out at YUSU club nights.

Adele Lord, Manager of Tokyo said:

I want to say thank you to YUSU for the last three years which we have been hugely grateful for, and we have enjoyed immensely. Also thank you to all of the students that have visited our Tokyo Thursday and for all of the support – I’ve met some truly inspirational students over the years.

“I’d also like to wish every YUSU club night the very best of luck, I hope that they have successful nights over the next year and that they enjoy them as much as we have. We certainly look forward to pitching again in the future.”

  1. The comment: ‘Concerns have also been raised about the new strip club planned for upstairs at Tokyo.’ is interesting… Mansion already have a strip club upstairs? Not convinced this is the most well thought through argument.

  2. so all 4 official YUSU club nights go to ONE promoter – York Parties. The standard of York commercial nightlife compared to other cities / uni’s is diabolical and this is in no small part to selling them all off to the corporate mess that is Adam Jay and York Parties. Anyone who thinks Revs has a “classy, relaxed feel” needs to take a long hard look at themselves in the mirror. Kuda and Revs are terrible. Why was Phat Fridays bid not accepted despite smashing all the official nights into little bits last year?

Done really well to address those criticisms buddy.

  3. Pretty pathetic events year in year out. Why have outside companies been invited to put on on-campus events when there are perfectly good societies capable of booking good artists and running the nights? Kallum Taylor is clueless.

  4. I don’t think it should go to Mansion as it has strip club. Tokyo better option!!!
