York were knocked out in the semi-final round of University Challenge tonight, as Peterhouse College, Cambridge won a fiercely fought match, 145-100.

York took an early lead as Peterhouse floundered, going into negative points; but in the final rounds the Oxbridge college fought back.

David Landon Cole, captain of the York team, told York Vision: “In the end, we were beaten by a better team.

“We had a huge amount of fun from selection to semi-final, and the support from the whole U of Y community was tremendous.

I will never, ever forget the Latin name of the Scottish wildcat.”

Fellow teammate Sam Smith took to Twitter to say that University Challenge was great fun, but that he still couldn't believe the York team had made it so far into the competition, beating out 24 other teams for a space in the semi-final.

Question topics ranged from less frequently used railway stations, to Napoleon, and literal rocket science.

Both teams initially struggled to gain points during the tough round – by the halfway point both sides had only scored 55 points combined.

The questions were very tough, even for these experienced competitors. Peterhouse student Powell’s expressions were telling as one round was announced to be “only” rocket science

With only minutes to go Peterhouse took the lead, 100-75, and York responded courageously, reaching a respectable 100-110.

York were confident and reeled off correct answers to bonus questions towards the end of tonight’s competition, but ultimately it was not enough. Peterhouse dominated in the final seconds, winning 145-100.

The team, which have become no stranger to the media spotlight, went home empty handed.

In the first round of the competition York had decimated Manchester 265-90 and wiped out Christ’s College, Cambridge 225-120.

York had already played Peterhouse College in the quarter finals, losing by 20 points, 185-165. They soon returned to form crushing St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge 180-115 and wiping out Imperial College London 260-135.

  1. I think Sam Smith’s answering the questions was worthy of going further in the competition, particularly on Europe. That’s not to disrespect Joly, David or Mr Mcloughlin, because they were all impressive. ,
