YORK – Fashion Capital of the North

This Friday at 19:00, York’s own Fashion Society (in collaboration with Leeds University Fashion Society) are hosting their very own show at Carluccios restaurant in St Helen’s Square. We at Vision got to sit down with one of the organisers of the Fashion Society’s exciting International Fashion Show, Ian Fyfe to talk more about their upcoming event.

The show is in aide of Beats, the UK’s leading eating disorder charity, with a fundraiser running alongside the event https://www.gofundme.com/nmkww-international-fashion-show. Chosen because the society wanted to do something to help those with mental health issues, especially given the problems in York, and chose an eating disorder charity because of the link to the fashion industry and its lack of representation of diverse body types.  To further the links between mental health and fashion, the society invited Paula Delgado, a designer who clothes are inspired by body dysmorphia, to display her designs at the show.

Whilst it is only fledgling, Ian wanted to make clear that the fashion society is for everyone and recieved a lot of interest from models (who even asked to audition), but the society wanted to make sure that all peoples and all body types are welcomed in the society and in the show. Being an international fashion show, there are 15 separate countries represented spanning the globe with a model/ models representing that countries fashion, both traditional and contemporary.  Designers include: (the already mentioned) Paula Delgado; the Tolkien inspired Sabrina Wharton Brown; and Nuno Lopez, who was featured in Vogue magazine. All are showing off both traditional and contemporary designs from their own countries to demonstrate how fashion has changed across nations and where we came from. Although, the show will feature designs, there will also be a number of performances, from the Latin American Society to a KPOP performance to numerous other cultural showcases.

The event is mostly student oriented, with all the models being made up of students as well as some student designers that will feature alongside the more established names. But Ian still wants the city to be involved, given that the event is part of the city’s Fashion Week and they have received offers of help from the public to help models get dressed for the show, and of course the event is open to members of the public as well as students. The rest of the events for the City’s Fashion week can be found at: http://www.yorkfashionweek.co.uk/programme

Though this may be the biggest event the society has hosted so far, we at Vision wish them all the success that they deserve, and given the interest this and their recent Breakfast at Tiffany’s event generated, we can see that they will go on to do big things.
