Vision’s Sports Guide To: Badminton

college badmintonThe University’s Badminton club had a steady season last year, with both the mens and womens 1sts making progress in their leagues. The men’s first team finished in fourth place against tough opposition in the Northern 2B league, while the Women’s team faired more successfully, finishing 2nd.

Away from the competing side of things, the club is also well known on Campus for its laid back attitude towards people who just fancy trying out the sport, offering many sessions for this very need.

President Alistair told Vision why the Badminton club is one to look out for: “The University of York Badminton Club is one of the most popular sports clubs on campus with around 170 members. We are a very inclusive club, welcoming to players of any level.

“The club has seven hours of court time a week when any member can come and play, and we offer two free sessions to everyone so it’s definitely worth giving badminton a go.

“This year we are also offering sessions of No-Strings badminton – a set of six coaching sessions aimed at beginners who are keen to improve their skills and learn more about badminton.”

‘Our eight teams (three men’s, two ladies’ and three mixed) play in BUCS and local leagues, and have an additional six hours of training time per week. Our two ladies teams did particularly well this year. Both only narrowly missed out on promotion in their leagues, but we’ve high hopes for the year ahead’.

Alistair was also keen to mention that it’s not just the hard work the club takes seriously though: “We are also known for our amazing range of socials and fundraising events.

“Our socials typically include nights out in town, quiz and pudding nights, our annual barbeque, holiday, and Presidents’ Weekend (a weekend including a formal meal with returning club alumni and of course lots of badminton).

Other key events include our termly tournaments, friendlies with Leeds Uni and Overnight Badminton (12 hours of badminton overnight in the Sports Centre to raise money for RAG’).
