Vision’s Sport Guide To: Volleyball

The university’s Volleyball team had an indifferent affair in the BUCS league last year, with the men’s 1st team finishing fifth in their league and exiting the cup in the first round, while the women’s fared better in their league, finishing 3rd, but replicated the same misfortune in the cup.

The club is made of two men and women’s teams, both competing in BUCS, while speaking to Vision, President Ryan spoke about a new initiative the club is introducing. ‘We have 4 teams that all compete in BUCS against other universities in the North-East as well as a beginners sessions that runs every week. As of this year, we will be entering 2 teams into a new local league to compliment our BUCS games as well as the National Cup and Student Cup, so it’s fair to say we are competitive’!

While the performances in the BUCS leagues may not have been as successful as they had hoped, the team are keen to dwell on the positives of last year, including some very strong performances in the competition that matters most as York; Roses.

“Our recent successes came from Roses where the Women’s 1st team won convincingly 3-0 and the mixed team lost by a few points in a close, nail-biting match. As well as this, all our teams finished in a respectable position in their BUCS leagues and we hope this year to improve and build on last year’s achievements’.

Off the court, the club like to make sure their athletes still have a chance to bond and socialize, ‘as a club we hold weekly socials and a formal meal every term which are always a great occasion. When the weather is good, we also play outdoors which is a great experience and in summer term regularly organise trips to play beach volleyball. We also train twice a week and have regular coaches who support our captains which helps improve our playing standard significantly’.

‘Furthermore, we host sitting volleyball sessions every week which are aimed at disabled students and members of the community but members of the club also go along to help run the session and to play a very interesting sport.

Ryan was keen to stress the openness of the club, welcoming first timers and well as old hands to make their way to the direction of the volleyball stall at freshers fair and head down to the try outs.

“Whether you are a seasoned veteran or someone who wants to try something new I encourage you to come to our trial session (dates TBC) or our weekly beginners session. This is an opportunity to join one of the universities most exciting, social and upcoming clubs!

“We hope to see you soon!”
