Tres (Moro) Chic

Vision sits down with the founder and designer of Morochic, Inayah Sadiq, a second year student studying Accounting,Business Finance and Management, to talk about the brand and the recent international fashion show.

Morochic was started in 2016 after Inayah visited Morocco, falling in love with both the culture and artisan work that were on display in the Souks of Marrakech. When visiting Morocco again,

she made friends with a supplier of bags, with the intention of starting something in the UK.  Using her own designs and materials supplied from them , Morochic was created! The first material used to create the first collection was ‘Kilim’ , a material often used to make Moroccan Kilim rugs . The strong geometric patterns , bright colours and intricate woven textures created an indispensable design for the Morochic bags. Kilim is made in the Atlas Mountains, by traditional Moroccan people known as ‘Berber’. Each Kilim carpet produced tells a different story and this is reflected in the Morochic collection. Every bag produced is unique in its own way and showcases the amazing craftsmanship of the artisans work that they produce in creating these bags. As well as ‘Kilim’ material, Inayah also uses cowhide and leather to create different styles of bags. Her cowhide tote bag is one of her most popular items on the website.

Inayah seeks to expand her collection every couple of months, with her most recent addition being to dive into men’s bags, again using materials that Marrakesh is famed for, notably leather, which makes for excellent briefcases and casual backpacks. Whilst this is her newest collection, her more popular and ambitious items are her make-up bags which can double up as a clutch (and is reversible for cleaning), and her women’s metal snake-skin bags, designed for the evening wear.

By selling these bags in the UK, Inayah has opened the Moroccan makers up to a whole new market, allowing them to thrive. Whilst the business is only fledgling at the minute, Inayah wants to expand her business to generate more customers so that the makers will not lose their own businesses. She plans to give 10% of her profits to a charity based in Morocco called Project Soar. It works to empower adolescent girls through education and improving their sense of self-worth through activities such as sports and after school reading clubs. Inayah is committed to growing the brand and is very excited for the future of Morochic.
