This Week in Music: News round-up

The big news of the week, depending on how much attention you devote to not-washed-up-because-they’ve-always-been-washed-up punk grunge bands from the 90s, is the release of a new Pixies music video. Written and directed by Pixies biographer Josh Frank, the video accompanies EP2 track ‘Greens and Blues’ and echoes the band’s new chunkier, more rounded sound with far out images, an early 2000s colour pallet and Mel Rodriguez from ‘Little Miss Sunshine’.

At the slightly weirder end of things, Ricky Gervais is taking to the stage as David Brent this May to well and truly give the public exactly what they want. Promising classics including ‘Slough’ and ‘Free Love Freeway’, the shows will likely be made even funnier with the realisation that Gervais, somewhere beneath the layers of irony, is actually living out some unresolved teenage dream.

A man, known only as Alex, has appeared on Gumtree claiming to be Kurt Cobain’s old roommate. Cut off by Cobain following his rise to success, Alex has finally come to terms with the brutal relationship duke and is now selling off a pair of skis, a telephone and TOMY game abandoned by the king of grunge.

Pitchfork has just awarded their highest album rating in a month to New Jersey band Real Estate’s ‘Atlas’. Not so much news as a clumsy segway, the album is incredible and should be listened to. (You can do so here, but probably buy it afterwards.)
