Stefan Gillot (Environment and Ethics Officer)

StefanGillottPICName: Stefan Gillot

College: James College

Year: 1

Subject: Environmental Science

Campaign in three words: Communication, Networking, Action

What’s the most important part of your manifesto?

Kinda hard to answer because everything has merit in its own way. I feel in the long term it will be working with the University to help communicate what they are doing and how students can become more sustainable in their lives while at York as this could have the greatest environmental impact benefit.

How do you differ from the other candidates?

I believe I differ because I am older. I have worked full time for 7 years before coming back to education. I have lots of experience in different fields of work. Nothing directly linked to the environment but the skills I have learnt will set me apart from the other candidates. I have not been at York long, being a 1st year Undergraduate but I have already proved I am committed to making change with the sustainability survey I put together to get a gauge of the student opinion on the matter.

What was your favourite thing the previous officer did and why?

Started a network which will be vital for my role to use. The network I hope to build on and get more students involved.

What’s the most important thing about the role you are going for?

I would say changing the view of ‘environmentalists’. I am want to help students understand what is going on with facts, figures and evidence if they need it.

How are you campaigning?

No idea, I’m not a publicity kind of person. I hope people vote on a merit and skills basis, not a popularity thing.

What do you like the most about York?

The amazing campus we have. It is easy to focus on the lake water quality and the dodging of mess on the paths we have to avoid. What I do know is the amount of work going on behind the scenes to improve biodiversity and the campus wildlife situation is amazing. Guess this is why our estates manager Gordon was nominated for the new years honours list! Go on Gordon!

What’s the best slogan you can think of for your campaign?

Action speaks louder than words.
