Preview: Crystal Fighters

Crystal Fighters

Maverick Spanish quartet, Crystal Fighters have been creating eclectic and innovative dance music since their formation in 2007.

The mesmeric group, currently consisting of Sebastian, Gilbert, Graham and Eleanor, first broke into the mainstream UK music scene in December 2009 with their second single titled ‘I Love London’ from their debut album, ‘Star of Love’. Following this, they supported Foals on their UK tour in 2010 before embarking on their own in October of the same year. Their most recent single ‘You and I’ from their forthcoming album, Cave Rave has also made a big impression on people in the UK music ‘know’. Zane Lowe named it as his ‘Hottest Record in the World’ when it was debuted on his Radio 1 evening show.

The band take their name from an opera that past member Laure’s grandfather wrote but never managed to finish. Laure dug up the unfinished musical piece from her grandfather’s attic in the Basque countryside in Spain and the band decided to create their own music based around his ideas. Throughout their musical career, the Crystal Fighters have been heavily influenced by Basque music.

The band are renowned for their high energy and slightly surreal sound incorporating a variety of difference genres, and their live shows don’t escape this! From building their sets around an opera, to performing with various props and Basque instruments, the unconventional quartet know how to keep things interesting. They’ve played on many international stages including Creamfields Spain, Leeds, Secret Garden Party and Park Life.

And now, to mark the release of their second album, Cave Rave, in May of this year, Crystal Fighters are embarking on an exiting tour of Europe and North America.

They’re stopping off at Leeds along the way! Catch them Monday 25 November at Stylus, Leeds University Union.
