38 York students conquered a gruelling marathon around the city of Amsterdam, raising a staggering £46,000 for Worldwide Cancer Research.
The race, which occurred on Sunday 18th October, was the culmination of 8 months of intense training and rigorous fundraising efforts. The fundraising involved a number of events, including pub quizzes, coffee mornings and bucket collections across York, some of which were organised by York team leaders Peter Bunce and Felix Aylett, who supported the participants throughout the entire process.
The group travelled with charity fundraising team Choose a Challenge and were met by over fifty York students who made it to Amsterdam to support the runners. The extremely wet and dull conditions did little to dampen the support team’s energy, as they carried all the runners round the 26.2 mile course with their energetic cheering, among the massive continued crowds that flocked to the streets. 16,000 people took part in the huge event and the entire group from York successfully completed the course. York student Isaac Beevor was fastest, and even made the top 4 on Choose a Challenge’s all time marathon finishing time list, in an impressive 3:15:18. The event is the sixth Choose a Challenge event that York students have participated in over the last three years. The enthusiastic team is already organising next year’s marathon challenge, with Istanbul 2016 being the chosen course.
