Little Black Book of York: Campus Hairdressers

Market_Place_1200It’s hard to classify Mayanchi (the student hair salon) as a hidden gem of York, because it is right in the middle of campus, wedged between Costcutter (I will not cede to the hostile takeover of naming rights) and YourShop.

Nevertheless, whenever I go in for a “short back and sides, no I don’t know what number I want, what’s the difference? Just don’t do anything too outrageous”, I seldom have to make an appointment, and the hair dressers look criminally underworked. Despite a company name crudely redolent of a tantric massage parlour, Mayanchi do broadly know how to cut hair, which puts them head and shoulders (if you’ll pardon the nauseating pun) above most of their competition.

As a strapping young chap, I have had no need for the services of the female hair dresser/s, but I can certainly vouch for the man. He has accumulated enough stubble and grease to enter into the category of edgy, but is personable enough for his affinity with oversized flannel shirts to not grate too much against my nerves.

The upkeep of personal hygiene should be a pressing issue for freshers on campus. Gone are the days of unkempt, grungy teens representing some subversion of prim and trimmed city boys; and you are horribly mislead if you feel compelled to grow your hair out of admiration for a Lord of the Rings character, in the fading hope that it will make your LARPing session that bit more realistic. Whilst this is obviously a review of Mayanchi, what I really want to reinforce is that I think more people should get a haircut, bloody beatniks.

  1. I am morally outraged at this article. The writers has the style of an inbred geckos, who, while being able to speak passable Spanish, has acute trouble communicating in English. You moronic twat.
