An investigation is being launched into alleged ‘sexist’ comments made at a Roses sporting event.

A post being shared on Facebook claimed there was “sexist and lewd jeering from the crowd” at the women’s water polo fixture and included a picture of someone on the men’s water polo team who aimed comments at the post’s author.

The pictured Lancaster supporter reportedly shouted “I’d do you number 7.”

When the subject of the remark confronted the man, she was told to “take it as a compliment”.

In her Facebook post, she urged people to lobby the universities over social media to take action.

She said: “Hopefully this will prevent this type of ingrained sexism being normalised within sports and universities in general.

“It would be great if the first years next year aren’t taught to expect it as part of their uni life.”

Lancaster University Students’ Union’s official Twitter account responded to tweeters, saying they will investigate the issue.

YUSU and the University are yet to respond to comments on Twitter

The incident took place on Saturday in the York Sport Village.

York’s women’s water polo team beat Lancaster’s team 13-4.

UPDATE: YUSU President Sam Maguire today released a blog post saying: “Such behaviour is absolutely unacceptable.

“We are taking the complaints we have received very seriously and there will be thorough investigations into what took place.”
