Students have been offered hundreds in compensation following the loss of a dozen exam papers by the English Department.

Compensation of £500 for each affected student was announced by the University in a statement released today.

This would make the total amount of money being offered by the University equal to £6,000.

A University spokesperson said: “The Senior Management Group discussed this matter today. Following the meeting, the Pro Vice Chancellor for Teaching & Learning has written to the students affected offering a full and unreserved apology on behalf of the University.

“In recognition of the extra work they will have to undertake (in the form of a 2,000-2,500 word essay), he has also made an offer of £500 compensation for each student.

“He has also instituted a thorough review of our procedures in relation to the secure handling of exam scripts, in order to ensure that this never happens again.”

This follows a statement by the Head of the English Department, where he said: “If the gods have been asked to devise a cruel instrument to punish us, under these circumstances, they have fulfilled their mandate.”
