Charity shops – they may not encapsulate chic but they certainly are cheap. If you look hard enough you’ll discover stylish goodies aplenty, eagerly awaiting a place in your wardrobe. If that’s not enough of a selling point then an afternoons browse might just be enough to convert you into a fully fledged fan. With the wealth of charity shops on York’s cobbled streets, a few hours spent rummaging around will undoubtedly unearth some treasures.
A short stroll down Goodramgate, located on the Minster side of town, and you will find yourself in charity shop heaven. The side street boasts branches of Oxfam, Help The Aged and many more conveniently clustered. You will not leave disappointed. Don’t be fooled into thinking this is just a fashion haven for OAPs. They say that fashion has a habit of repeating itself. and with the current vogue for vintage you can easily find something, that, with a few tweaks, wouldn’t look out of place in a fashion magazine.
A current favourite of mine; ‘granny-esque’ skirts which can easily be taken up to create something fashionable and truly individual. I’ve noticed that Goodramgate is currently awash with fabulous 80’s jumpers too. Great; not only for your look but also an essential for surviving the tough Yorkshire winter ahead.
Those with a keen eye may even find themselves stumbling upon a designer find at a bargain price, great for giving you that lovely smug feeling when you can tell an admirer “its Gucci.” Even more satisfying when you think of the minimal impact on your bank balance.
Charity shops are also great for quirky, real vintage accessories. From belts to brooches, scarves to shoes. These can be mixed up within your wardrobe to create a totally unique outfit, avoiding that embarrassing moment in a seminar when you realise that you’re one of three of the five girls sporting TOPSHOP’s latest must-haves.
If you’re not so far tempted to delve deep into the hidden gems of York get this; The Times has recently labelled charity shops as the ‘treasure troves of chic.’ Furthermore, with celebrities such as Henry Holland and Jamie Winstone embracing this thrifty way of updating their wardrobes, it surely is the way forward for the savvy shopper. Charity can really begin at home; a unique find with a worthy profiteer.
So next time you’re in town I would advise you to pop into a few charity shops, have a rummage, keep an open mind and if anybody asks “darling, it’s vintage.”

This is a nice blog. I must say that thriftiness must come first at home. This will make you save a lot of money in terms of buying wardrobes and other stuff. Thanks a lot for this friendly tip. More power.
