Vanbrugh lose out in Varsity

Vanbrugh 1 – 2 St Hild & St Bede

St Hild & St Bede got off to a good start, hitting the post somehow in the first minute.
However after this their chances were few and far between, with Vanbrugh dominating for most of the first half.

Their first chance came when Sides danced past a few players on the left before laying it off to Tabas in his new centre mid position, however his shot was narrowly wide.

Potts was causing numerous problems on the in the first half, running past the left back effortlessly and whipping in dangerous crosses time after time. Tabas managed to get on the end of one if these but his volley was just off target.

Vanbrugh were dominating the midfield with Siddle and Carruthers both pressuring and keeping the ball well. Their goal came from Carruthers 20 minutes into the first half. He picked the ball up around 20 yards out, skipped past two players and fired a Coutinho-esque shot across the keeper into the top right corner.

Vanbrugh were cruising now with chances falling to Lund and Sides, but they couldn’t find a second goal despite their dominance.

The second half was a lot more scrappy and even, with the windy Stoke like conditions playing a part. St. Hild & St. Bede managed to find a equaliser through a quick counter which resulted in an accurate header out of the Donell-Fords reach.

The game was growing increasingly scrappy and St. Hild & St. Bede managed to add a second when Paulas was left isolated on the counter which allowed the opposing striker to run in and curl a shot into the side netting making it 2-1.

Vanbrugh fought back and came close through a Carruthers free kick, whilst Sides also saw his shot hit the crossbar late in the game. Durham also hit the post, but truthfully Vanbrugh were very unlucky not to get a result, with this being one of the games York actually deserved to win.
