Selvakumar double inspires Men’s Hockey 1sts win

A QUICK-FIRE double from York Men’s Hockey 1sts captain Nish Selvakumar helped his team secure a 3-0 win in a scrappy affair played in wet conditions at the Richard Larkin Astro.

With the rain making the astroturf extremely slippery, both sides failed to establish any fluidity to their game, with the White Rose rewarded for their efficiency in finishing three of the very few chances they had.

It was a fast paced start to the game, with the Lancaster post being rattled following York’s first meaningful attack of the game. Despite a promising start, the frantic nature of the fixture and the conditions meant that both sides struggled to create any flowing moves.

Instead, the hosts used the winning of penalty corners to create chances, their first of the game directed just wide.

No matter, for the White Rose would score from a penalty corner a few minutes later. A shot was fired into the area from the corner and Sam Richardson flicked it past a helpless Lancaster ‘keeper to give York a lead which they never looked like squandering.

The second half proved as scrappy as the first, which suited the White Rose, who by now were happy for Lancaster to struggle to create opportunities. The visitors, however, managed to forge a move down the right flank before a shot was fired across the face of goal. Lancaster then had a one-on-one with the ‘keeper, but Callum Chaundy brilliantly smothered the effort on goal.

With the Red Rose beginning to find openings, York’s second came as a huge relief. Unsurprisingly given the continued scrappy nature of the affair, it came from another short corner, Selvakumar firing the ball home following a goalmouth scramble.

The third was to come moments later, Selvakumar given too much space by the Lancaster defence to fire home from the edge of the area.
