– Wentworth leave fixture in doubt before handing in eleventh hour line-up.

– Hudson hobbles off the pitch in the second half.

The Langwith 1sts turned a few campus heads on a windy afternoon at the 3G as they eased to a 5-0 victory over a hastily assembled Wentworth XI.

The die seemed cast when I was only able to note down the postgrads’ line-up moments before kick-off, as it wasn’t clear who exactly was going to show up. And with Wentworth’s game against Derwent being called off last week, the Langwith players knew they were facing disorganised opposition, giving them no respite from the off.

Just a few minutes in, Langwith’s Matt Morton met Marcus Campbell’s corner with aplomb, crashing his header against the crossbar. Moments later, playmaker Dyaus Gohil-Patel found himself one-on-one with Wentworth stopper Jon Cook, only to poke his effort right at the latter.

The Langwith onslaught continued, and captain Tom Benney looked destined to have found the top corner with his volley from the left flank, before Cook brilliantly palmed over.

Despite starting the match strongly, Cook would see himself turn from hero to villain when he spilled a looping Gohil-Patel corner right into the feet of Tom Pickersgill, who duly smashed it into the roof of the net from close range.

Matt Morton then followed up with a header which squeezed under the legs of Cook, before he added another via a tap in at the far post from a Benney cross. With less than half an hour played, Langwith were three up and the game was over. The only tarnish on Langwith’s day was a nasty looking injury to Ben Hudson, who limped off.

At this point, I contemplated going home and making up a story about having to let my housemate in as he’d lost his keys. But my duty to inform you lot prevailed, and I decided to settle for the luxury of sitting in the Wentworth dugout instead…which wasn’t the best place to be as the Langwith goals kept coming.

Shortly before half time, substitute Sam Woodall side-footed home, well and truly killing any hopes of a Wentworth comeback.

With the result all but rubber stamped, the pointless second half which ensued was rather painful to watch. The only ray of light was Matt Morton completing his hat-trick from the penalty spot after a foul on Parsonson. Morton then curled a beauty onto the post, before Pickersgill’s mazy run ended with the same fate. Langwith had been a joy to watch, but the full time whistle couldn’t have come sooner…especially for Wentworth.

Langwith now sit pretty in third in the Revolution Premier League with four points from two games, but with their next three fixtures against James, Derwent, and Halifax, the real test is still to come.
