The War of the Roses has come to an end, and York has once more emerged victorious. Making 2017 the 27th win for York in the history of our fifty-three year old tournament. After all 139 fixtures spanning 50 sports had run their course, the final scores stood at YORK – 202.5 LANCASTER – 159.5

It was at 3:23 on the last day of Roses that York claiming the Carter James Trophy became inevitable. The Women’s Badminton 2nd team had the honour of being the team to push York over the finish line. In a hard fought contest, the team emerged victorious, seeing off their Lancastrian opponents with a final score of 5-3. In doing so, they secured victory not only for themselves but the last 2 points needed to reach the total of 183.5 that would confirm York’s victory.

The Closing Ceremony for Roses took place on 22 Acres in front of a lively crowd with fantastic performances by York Hornets and York Samba kicking of celebrations. The proceedings began with talks not on the fixtures or results but on a topic that is close to the heart of many students, mental health. This year Roses’ paired with the Charities of York and Lancaster Mind, to raise awareness around the importance of talking about mental health and donations to aid accessibility to mental health provisions. York Mind’s Alison Scott took to the stage to thank students for their donations and ensure that “we can do some really meaningful work” because of them. Alison Scott also stressed the importance that “awareness raising needs to be met by accessibility.” Later on in his speech, University of York Vice Chancellor Malcolm Grant would go on to “endorse everything that Alison said” and refer to the fundraising that took place at Roses as “truly outstanding.”

The Closing Ceremony also saw Lancaster’s Vice-Chancellor Mark Smith take to the podium to thank everyone involved with the Roses process in York and Lancaster before handing over to YUSU Sports President Isaac Beevor. Isaac went on to present ‘the player of the tournament’ trophy that was awarded to York’s Jason Chan for his performance in the basketball game that kicked off Roses 2017 as it’s opening fixture. Finally, University of York Vice Chancellor Malcolm Grant presented the Carter James Trophy with Isaac Beevor and the York sport committee accepting on behalf of York Students.

Roses isonce more a year away, but the amazing work that Mind the mental health charity perform is all year round. As of publication, there are still 29 days remaining of the Roses 2017 donation campaign, so please donate what you can so Mind’s critical work can continue.
