Greggs, Papa John’s, and MORE, to open on Hes East

The University has confirmed seven new retailers are going to Heslington East Campus soon.

Retailers confirmed include:

  • Papa Johns, a pizza takeaway
  • Greggs, a bakers (sadly not located on Greg’s Place)
  • Subway, the sandwich franchise
  • An Independent Gelateria (Posh-sounding Ice Cream Shop), Indian Restaurant, and Barbers (traditionally a term for male-only hairdressers however most likely poor wording on the press statements behalf).
    And
  • Nisa – the much needed local supermarket for day-to-day

Residents of Heslington East colleges have been calling for better facilities ever since the move to Hes East Campus has started, hopefully this retail injection brought by recent developments to the campus will bring Heslington East the confidence it needs.

Uni bosses had previously planned to open new retailers on Hes East in the Piazza building and around the Field Lane medical centre were first planned for late 2016, according to the previous registrar, David Duncan. These plans were then adjusted to early 2017, and then further delayed, however this recent announcement fills hope that developments are nearly complete!

A spokesperson from Goodricke College, located on Hes East, said: “It’s great to see this new development to Campus East, which has often been described as lacking facilities to attract students. These new shops will be a great asset to the campus, and the colleges based there, and a welcome addition to student life at York.”

A spokesperson for Langwith College has said: “It’s about time we had some facilities on Hes East! It’ll be a real asset to students on this side of campus. Hopefully it will take away some of the negative stigma of the east campus being a ghost town. By having everything on our doorstep, instead of having to migrate to west – should encourage people to stick around. This is definitely a welcome addition to student life and will make it a lot easier for students who are located entirely on Hes East for their degrees.”

It is not yet clear how developments on Hes East will impact retailers in Market Square and Halifax College. Vision is contacting retailers and university officials for further clarification.
