So Vision have just finished speaking to Dan Walker… He had a lot to say, talking about being able to sing along to ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ after he won, and thanked Goodricke for the vote which he believed ‘had a large hand in it’. His number one priority is promoting college strength, though specifically would like to put a forum up on the YUSU website as soon as he can. He thanked other colleges for their votes, saying that “I hope my policies appeal to all colleges – especially the shopping bus for Halifax, James and Alcuin. I think a lot of people feel ripped off by Costcutter. Ideally we’d have it driven every week by a different sabb so people can get to know them that way. It’ll help students financially, up YUSU’s exposure as a body trying to ehlp students and get sabbs talking to the students who don’t just want to get drunk every night. I’m completely shell-shocked, though, both candidates have been a lot of fun to campaign against… We’ve sat and talked about campaigns and they’ve been outstanding. I wish them the very best!”

01.59

Hucthings: “Respect, Tim did a good job. I knew my campaign was risky, but at least the number of first preference votes I got showed that I’m not considered a universal bell-end.” Also, the fox is in a bag at the moment, but he promises it will be out again at some point tonight.

01.52

Powell: “It is what it is”. Ouch.

01.50

Oliie Hutchings reportedly crying. We feel your pain. mate.

01.49

One disenchanted Halifax student told us: “Who the fuck is Tim Ngwena?”

Another student asks: “This will be a very bad year for YUSU.”

01.49

Crowds leave with mixed emotions. Another year, another vote. Controversy, despair and delight. All in one night. That’s YUSU for you.

01.49

All Vision’s photos tonight courtesy of Daniel Gilks, hope you have enjoyed them.

01.48

Sam Asfahani, newly elected York sports president! He seems very happy but very tired, having played rugby all day. One of Asfahani’s main polices is the bulidng of a 3G pitch, which he brands the “latest technology of astroturf”. He believes that it is a completely achievable goal and says that he would not run on something you don’t think you can achieve. He hopes he will be able to continue playing American Football despite of his new full-time job.

01.47

Tom Martin: “I personally think that there’s something to it that someone who holds a position gets re-elected. At the end of the day, I look forward to working with Tim.”

01.46

Frecks: “I’m gutted, but what can I say, it’s democracy. None of my policies will happen then…”

01.46

Ngwena, newly announced YUSU President celebrates with friends.

01.45

RON – the unsung hero of the elections. He’ll have his day soon.

01.44

Some will win, some will lose.

01.43

Well, what a team for next year.

01.43

Jason Rose is boogieing past the Vision table. Well at least someone is happy.

01.42

YSTV coverage, looking like a scary version of This Morning, Henry and Anna, a poor mans Richard and Judy.

Disbelief as Ngwena wins again.

01.37

Come on Dave.

01.36

Here we go…

01.36

So just President to go now. Hutchings has topped just about every poll. But to be honest I wouldn’t say that any candidate has no chance at all.

01.34

It’s the final countdooooooooooooooooooooooooooooown

01.34

Frecks seems a bit too big for his boots, when asked how he was feeling by a Visioner he replied ‘not nervous at all- very very confident’.

01.33

Bretts looking excited as ‘Final Countdown; is played. Do you see what they’ve done there?

01.32

Here we go kids…

01.31

If Ollie Hutchings doesn’t win he’ll be the only one to contradict the exit polls. Ruins the fun a bit doesn’t it?

01.30

Laura Bo is evidently ecstatic at winning. Apparenlty she is the first international Sabbatical Officer… probably should check that, first Lithuanian officer at least. Bo admits she was the underdog but not sure why she won. Bo stands by her comments earlier this week that Warner-Medley has more experience and would like to use his signage policy, but only with his permission of course!

Rose: “it’s a conclusive victory and Dan did very well and I think he’s going to be an amazing D&S officer and I wish him well.”
Hutchings: “I can’t react, I don’t want to compromise myself – congrats to Dan, commiserations to Sam and to Etheridge.”
Etheridge: “Congrats to Dan, commiserations to Sam. I’m very proud of everyone, I wish Dan every success.”

Just talked to Ben Humphrys! On the unexpected Bo victory, he comments that he “will always back the student body in their political decisions”. He is thrilled he has been given the opportunity represent the students for another year. He admits that name recognition might have played a part but maintains that he the students have made a decision based on policies. His welfare experience will be incorporated in his new position, as welfare affects every part of university life. Though he recognizes that cuts are decided by the government and he can’t affect that, he pledges to work to make sure that any cuts do not primarily affect learning.

00.17

Just spoke to Tom Martin and Nell Beecham, the newly elected LGBT officers. Both are very exited! One of their main policies is to “branch out” in terms of the role of the committee. They want to further publicise the role of the college LGBT reps and aim to develop closer links with other offices. They also hope to increase their membership.

00.15

David Levene facebook group accidently displayed on the big screen. Hmmm…

00.15

We are hearing gossip: Rihanna Kinchin text Rachel Hesslewood to tell her that she was the “best candidate” and ran the “best campaign”. Adds fuel to the whole Scarlett fire.

00.12

Having already seen one losing Academic Officer candidate in tears, Jason Rose seems to have gone AWOL.

00.11

Daniel Goddard: Tim Ngwena and Sam Daniels suddenly stopped their conversation when I came in the toilet. Nick Scarlett and Matthew Freckleton where there too. They threatened to beat me up and lock me in the cubicle so I made a swift exit…

00.04

After a mammoth four round battle to defeat the combined forces of Bailey, Vince, Rose and RON Ben accepts his new position.

00.04

Welfare up next…

00.03

Ollie Hutchings: “I’m really happy for Ben, I think he’ll do a really sterling job. I feel really sorry for Jason, all the candidates put up a good fight, but Ben will be really good at this over the next year.”

00.02

Dan Walker: “Nervous and excited. All 3 would have been amazing, but Ben will do a cracking job.

00.02

Can’t believe that Jason Rose did so well. He lost to RON in the past. Obviously all that time spent at YUSU committees paid off. He is actually on more committees than Tim Ngwena. Unbelievable. Maybe he will do something other than YUSU now?

00.00

Charlie Leyland: “I’m so excited, ben’s going to be amazing. He’s helped me alot and he’s going to be absolutely amazing. I’m really happy” Dan Walker: “damn straight he is!”

23.59

Gives Ben an email or a text and he will do it. Big offer Ben.

23.59

Ben Humphrys with 1121 in the fourth round manages to defeat Rose and become the new Academic Affairs Officer.

23.58

Third round, it is obvious to everyone that Humphrys has won, but we must go to a fourth round, this is silly.

23.58

Ben Humphyrs takes the Second round, but again does not reach the quota.

23.58

Janey Stephenson and Charlotte Phillips say they are more excited than relieved. Were disappointed their rivals got any votes but glad to have won nonetheless!

23.57

That means that the quota is not met and a second round of voting begins.

First Sabbatical position of the night up now. Academic Affairs Officer:

As he is partly responsible for bringing 10:10 to the university he pledges to follow up on whether they actually stick to their promise. 23.36

Entertainment Officer winners Anthony Richards and Stephen O’Ryan look quite pleased with themselves. Their priority is to publish an ents quideline… whatever that is. Joint college events seem to be a key passion of theirs. Want to bring back up the standard of student events, however they thought freshers’ fair was good so perhaps their expectations are a bit low…

23.36

Jason Rose is on the screen. Ooh he does look charming. A natural presence on camera: big grin, crossed legs, cheery demeanour.

23.35

Dan Walker just went to the toilet “because of the nerves”. Seems quietly confident after coming out on top in the exit poll results.

Just finished speaking to James and Jon, the new RAG officers, so here’s what they had to say… They want to see colleges getting more and more involved in RAG, building on the success of events like Mr and Mrs York. Their big focus was to get wider involvement, building on Zoe and Helen’s success over the past year, but they did say that they’d perhaps change RAG Week a bit, in order to have more daytime events. They were slightly disappointed at the lack of people running against them, but hope to get more people interested in running for the position next year. And their favourite printed newspaper? Vision!

23.29

Winners are happy. A deserved win.

23.27

And the winners are : Phillips and Stevenson

23.27

Its not looking good for Saul and Pickard…

23.27

Halifax!

23.26

We find out who the most sexist college is…

23.26

Just talked to newly elected campaigns officers Luke Sanford and Suzy Dodd. Their main policy for next year is to work against the potential fee increases. They also support schemes to get students of poorer background into the university to increase diversity. They pledge to continue to work on the portering campaign, as well as other long term campaigns. In a bid to fight student apathy, they want to introduce the position of college campaigns coordinator to involve colleges in YUSU campaigns.

23.26

Madavo supports Levene all the way: “WE HAVE THE SAME HAIRSTYLE! WHY WOULDN’T I?”

23.25

Vision would like to apologise to Robin Kinchin for saying his sister (Rhianna) had a short skirt, he is getting angry on facebook chat. It is very short though…

23.25

Suzy and Luke, the newly elected Campaigns Officers speak to URY:

We will be bringing you URY’s podcasts throughout the night.

23.24

Etheridge says: “All the candidates (D&S) have done a good job, I’m not confident, I ran a good campaign, so we’ll see.”

23.23

Rory Shanks stopped by. He wonders if Saul and Pickard will finish below RON. Let’s hope so.

Women’s Committee up next…

23.21

Sam Daniels says: “I’m excited”. Steady on.

23.20

Listen to URY’s interview with the new RAG officers, James Croydon and Jonathan Hare

23.19

Environment and Ethics Officer: David Clarke

23.19

Womens Officers up next. Who’s going to win this one?

23.17

Has anyone else noticed that this year they are not dividing the votes into colleges? It’s made it a lot less exciting.

Hopefully they will do it for the sabbs at least.

23.16

Big Wentworth following…

23.15

One girl is bearing far too much on the dancefloor. Bit of a builder’s bum going on there. Not that I’m looking mind.

23.15

Environment and Ethics officer is…David Clarke

23.14

Tinnies are obviously the drink of choice tonight.

23.13

Controversial candidate Peter Saul has been spotted in Leeds train station by campus legend Zeenat Rahim. LOL!!!

23.13

Student Activities wannabes Nick Scarlett and Rachel Hesselwood will be doing shots together whether they win or lose – now that’s a real student activity!

23.11

All waiting eagerly for more riveting results.

23.09

Matt Bailey stopped by for a chat. What a lovely guy. Though he is “not optimistic” about his chances.

23.06

The new GSA reps (lovely guys apparently!) say that most postgrads don’t actually realise they are members of YUSU. Looking forward to working with the new 21+ officer though.

23.06

New 21+ Officer: Stephen Kenny

23.06

Apologies to Mr Kenney. Missed out the ‘e’ from his name there. Doubt he cares, probably at the bar after that win.

23.02

Contested positions only from now on.

23.02

21 plus officer now.

1,660 votes cast.

Stephen Kenny – 1428
RON – 232

Kenny triumphs easily.

23.01

Old sabb Joey Ellis doesn’t like Sam Daniels because he reminds her of last year’s D&S wannabe Ed Durkin according to gossip hunter Sammy Cowley

23.00

Student Activities candidate Katy Unsworth isn’t turning up till 23:30 apparently… ‘work commitments’.

22.59

The lights are on. Unfortunately it just emphasises how few people are here.

22.54

Matt Burton and Sam Bayley being interviewed on screen.

Bayley is back on campus these days. Apparently Burton pulled some strings and got him a job with the university.

22.51

Richard and O’Ryan win against RON with 1370 votes. Nice work.

22.50

Ents officer reults now….

22.48

New RAG officers: James Croydon and Jonathan

22.47

LGBT candidates Tom & Neil admit: “This is about striking a balance between being drunk and being eloquent and responsible.”

Good luck with that lads.

22.46

Apparently, Nick Scarlett and Tom Flynn both deleted Rhianna Kinchin as a friend on Facebook after a certain article in Vision

22.46

Just got back from speaking to Chris Young. In favour of more pizza at elections, something I am definately in favour of. Young implied he would like to join Vision as he doesn’t have any direct experience in it. Doesn’t think the Lemon Press should join YUM, but thinks they’ll get in anyway. Thinks there should be a clearer definition of what YUM is and believes the media charter is outdated. Maintains he is the voice of YUM and not the Union; will always speak for the media. Maintains that the student media is the strongest watchdog over Union activity.

22.45

A Halifax 1st year tells us: “Croydon and Hare are hot.” Let’s hope that can help them raise for charity.

22.43

Suzy and Luke, the new campaigns officers have run away it seems. No where to be seen. M

22.41

RAG officers now.

1418 votes to James Croydon and Jonathan Hare.

22.41

Rhianna Kinchin has got a very short skirt…

22.38

Would love to be eavesdropping on the Scarlett/Kinchin convo. Must be awkward.

22.37

Newly elected Campaigns Officers Luke Sandford & Suzy Dodd

They will be hard pushed to match the charisma of the previous incumbents, Rose and Etheridge.

22.37

Nick Scarlett walking around on his lonesome, trying to look for friends… no such luck.

Scrap that, he’s found Rhianna Kinchin. Again.

22.35

Rachael Hesselwood is on her way. A Visioner has gone to act as an escort. She is nervous apparently.

22.32

Campaign Officers are up…

Unelected (apart from RON)

1523 to Luke Sandford and Suzy Dodd win against 210 to RON

Good stuff.

22.31

Match of the Day is on. Regan and Mcdermott Snr are set to watch.

Might as well, there is nothing going on here.

22.30

Campaigns Officer up soon…

22.29

Cult campus figure Peter Campbell, a man who owns a set of business cards, is currently being beamed on the big screen.

He has been on for bloody ages. Can’t hear him though.

22.29

YUSU sabbs on the dance floor. Not dancing. Boring.

Let’s hope next year’s sabbs are up for a dance.

22.28

The first of our URY podcasts, they discuss the Exit Polls that were announced earlier today.

You need flash to listen to this podcast. Download it from Adobe.com

22.27

In response to ‘Angry Election Spectator’… I do understand how it works in theory but they rush through it so quickly it can be very confusing. With the NUS delegates, when it went into the second round the room was full of people going “what?”

22.25

Ben Humphrys overheard in the toilet loudly telling Tim Ngwena that the exit polls were fine and trying to reassure our current leader that all would be OK.

Humphrys also revealed how he would feel if he failed to win a second year in the YUSU office: “embarrassed”!

22.25

Newly Elected Racial Equality, Winnie and Mandi

22.24

Looking forward to seeing what happens at 23:20 when we hear the results of Womens officers. Mark Pickard (one of the 2 condemned male candidates) isn’t even here yet. Will be interesting to see how epically they fail.

Vision is meant to remain impartial, but at the moment YUSU are all getting pissed and they are the ones who moderate us.

22.22

Dan Walker has left his coat with Vision. Interesting to see he trusts us more than the other lot. You would think they were too rich to steal.

Shotgun his wallet.

22.20

Tom Martin, running for LGBT is less worried about being elected and more concerned with “Striking a balance between getting pissed and being eloquent and responsible,“ Lets hope he gets the balance right.

22.20

Turnout is looking pretty good. As many voted for Racial Equality officer as voted for President two years ago.

22.19

Only 2 candidates, standing together.

1475 votes to Madova and Amoaku.

Cracking stuff, they will be good we think.

22.18

Lewis is back.

Racial equality officers now….

22.17

The voice of students, Sam Westrop, our new NUS Rep, couldn’t wait to get off the stage, had a very short speech and wouldn’t even look at our friendly cameraman.

Sam Westrop NUS Rep, narrowly beating RON

22.17

Ollie Hutchings has been spotted wearing a dead fox around his neck. Interesting.

22.17

Apparantly David Levene was over-heard saying that he thinks his campaign was run the best.

Well David, we will see about that…

22.16

Dan Walker and Tim Ngwena seem to be amused by the Vision lot. But will they be laughing at the end of the night?

22.15

Here’s some gossip for you…

Which YUSU presidential candidate got caught downloading sci-fi porn?!?!?!?!?

Prizes for correct guesses!

22.14

Well at least Levene will win something tonight.

22.13

An unnamed Vision member is very happy that Westrop has won after a certain Gallery encounter she may or may not have had.

22.12

VERY confusing method of voting this. I’ve never fully understood it. I hope Lewis Bretts does.

22.12

Chris Young Accepting his YUM Chair Victory

22.12

NUS delegates:

Sam Westrop: 467
Davide Levene: 967
RON: 159

Sam Westrop: 851
Davide Levene: 531
RON: 207

THEY BOTH WIN!!

22.11

Lewis Bretts is up again. NUS delegates now. David Levene and Sam Westrop standing…

22.10

Today is a big day indeed. Not only the YUSU elections, but also the K Factor not-live finals on TV burp. Good luck Peter the Duck!!

22.09

Beginning to fill up now. They do like to drag this out don’t they?

22.08

To Anon:

We will get a photo to prove the bad turn out in a minute.

Vision are always right.

22.08

Nick Scarlett, hotly tipped for Student Activities, despite the untimely intervention of Rhiannon Kinchin said, “ I’m really happy about the exit polls, but I’m still really nervous. I am really glad to be able to wear nice clothes, I have been wearing fancy dress all week” Vision can confirm, Nick is looking very dapper, hopefully he can get up to some Student Activities later tonight.

22.08

Chris young has a tough job ahead of him. The forces of evil in YUSU have been brewing recently. Talk of making the Media Charter harsher on the papers.

Also there was a massive breach of the Media Charter by YUSU sabbs last week. Bad stuff.

22.06

YUM chair is…. CHRIS YOUNG!

With 1378 votes, the Nouse chief sub-editor (boooo!) takes over from Anna Bucks.

22.04

Charlie Leyland’s favourite sesame street character is Elmo.

Rhianna’s is the Cookie Monster. ‘C’ is for cookie.

22.03

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FOR ANY OF THE CANDIDATES, POST A COMMENT BELOW,

22.02

Very poor turn-out here. Much worse than last year.

I wonder if it will improve?

22.00

Back to the positions that matter,Tim Ngwena, hoping to be re-elected as President tonight, confessed “ I am going to be really nervous until the result is announced, the exit polls were really close so we will see”

21.59

Graeme Osborn was just announced the YUSU Senate Rep. He was unopposed but he comfortably dispatched RON.

21.53

So, what are we expecting tonight…

Looks like Ollie Hutchings has got it in the bag for president. Our poll put him on top, as did Nouse’s, plus he won the exit polls today… but we won’t know for sure until much later.

In the mean time we have all the non-sabb positions.

So far, nothing has happened. The Courtyard is VERY slowly filling up.

…OOHH the first result is here!!!…. Lewis Bretts is up on the stand!!

21.52

We just cornered Peter Warner medley, running for Welfare Officer, he said “ I’m terrified, a lot of people have told me I should be confident, but strange things happen in elections”

21.52

Hello homeys this is Daniel Goddard introducing you the York Vision Live Blog. We had some technical difficulties at first but I’m told they are being ironed out. We’ll have different people on all night, the likes of Martin Williams, Jim Norton, Andy Nichols, Milana Knezevic and possibily others will be keeping you covered throughout this evening.

21.45

Sorry this started a bit late!

I find it absolutely disgusting that Vision have someone covering this that cannot understand something as SIMPLE as the single transferable vote. You have let down your readership by failing to give the proper respect to this CORNERSTONE of campus democracy.
I hope you have your funding cut.

Surprising in a university of York’s calibre, given how simple it is. Just shows what university expansion does to the quality of York students.

@1:16 … TV career? Good shout.

And as for the STV – it is very complicated. However this isn’t really STV… This is bog standard AV (because each position only has one winner – if there had been 10 NUS delegates then that would have been STV). You eliminate the weakest candidate and their votes get redistributed. Simple. More importantly – though many people struggle with it, the people covering the election and running the election should probably understand it! :P

    Dear York Vision,

You are hereby charged with ruining the fun on Saturday, March 13 2010. On a number of separate incidences you attempted to ‘stir up shit’ between YUSU Student Activities Officer Rhianna Kinchin and YUSU Student Activities Officer-Elect Nick Scarlett, by implying they were in some sort of fight. In fact, they are close friends who anybody could have seen strutting their stuff in Fibbers on Friday Night, boogieing on down at the elections last night or working closely together on any number of events ranging from Kids Camp to We Are Golden.

For this grievous disturbance of the fun, you are hereby charged with 1 year of correctly researching stories and situations before publicly airing them.

    That is all.
